Default Window Updates Available Notifications?

I know this has been discussed by some before, but I am still not getting
notifications on my Taskbar when Windows Updates are available. I used to get
the Icon on my Taskbar when updates were available, but something must have
changed. What do I have to change/set to start getting the notifications again?

I am running Win7 64bit.

Thanks for any insights.

Is the Automatic Updates (later renamed to Windows Update) service set
to "Automatically - Delayed" startup mode? If that service is not
currently in the running state, can you start it manually?

Is the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) service set to
Manual startup mode? That mode means the service runs when a caller
process requests the service. BITS is not only used by the WU service.
BitDefender can use it, too (as well as the "Get Win10 App" bogus update
from Microsoft to lure Win7 users to Win10).

What happens when you manually check for updates? Is there an error
that the WU client cannot connect or do you get an empty list (after a
long wait)?

Are you using a 3rd party firewall? It could be blocking the WU service
from connecting to Microsoft's WSUS server. If the WU and BITS services
are set correctly (and WU is in the Started state), try disabling your
anti-virus and firewall software and see if you get new updates listed
when manually checking for them (assuming there are new updates
available for your Windows instance).

when I go to Windows Updates, the updates are there. If not, I run check for
updates and normally it is clean. But like today - did not get notification,
but went to Windows Updates - and had updates listed. I used to get the
notification, but this started a few months ago.

I have the same problem as charliec so I'll answer your questions. W7

Automatic (Delayed Start), currently Started.

Manual, currently Started.

No error message. 18 important updates are available.

Also "Show hidden icons" doesn't reveal a WU icon in the tray.

I used to get a tray icon when important updates were available, but
that stopped at about the same time I declined the W10 upgrade.

UnInstall the following updates:

KB3065987 Windows Update Client for Windows July 2015
KB3075851 Windows Update Client for Windows August 2015
KB3083324 Windows Update Client for Windows September 2015
KB3083710 Windows Update Client for Windows October 2015

Especially the first one; that did it for me, my icon is back in the tray.

Best Regards,

Thanks for the reply - what are these and do they appear each month. Deleting
will solve the problem, but will they appear next month??

If you don't elect to hide them, they will reappear each time you or the
WU client checks for new updates. Even if you hide them, they will
reappear if Microsoft updates the update to a new version. You can hide
a specific version of an update. You cannot hide all future versions of
an update.

I avoided all the updates mentioned by Booze. When the update was
deliberately obtuse or in any way referred to the Update Client or
compatibility update for it, I hid that update (not installed, not seen
again unless Microsoft came out with a new version of the same one).

I picked the obvious candidates for why WU doesn't work in Windows.
Another possibility is 3rd party security software, like anti-virus,
anti-malware, or firewall, that prevents the WU client from connecting
to Microsoft's WSUS server to either detect there are new updates
applicable to your host (by comparing the local catalog against the list
of updates that are applicable to your OS) or block getting the updates.
Updates that **** up the WU client are another possibility, as Booze
noted.

I have a slew of updates hidden (so not installed). Microsoft wants to,
for example, push Skype updates despite that I do not have Skype
installed. They want to push OneDrive for Business updates because I
have Office 2013 installed but that feature was not installed (I don't
have or use a Sharepoint server but I do have OneDrive for online file
storage which is a different program from OneDrive for Business). Alas,
after configuring the WU client to "never check for updates", I can no
longer see a list of which updates were hidden. I have to check for
updates and then I can see the hidden ones. The WU client takes way too
long to get a list of available updates for me to pend sending this
reply so I cannot give you a list of the Windows updates that I've
avoided and hidden.

I grew tired of getting hit repeatedly with bogus updates from Microsoft
proclaiming they are for Windows 7 when, in fact, they are for migration
to Windows 10, lures to Windows 10, or telemetry updates (spying). So I
set WU to "never notify". When I have the time and inclination to
update Windows, I will do so after I first save an image backup. Then I
will have to spend time reviewing each update if Microsoft provides any
reasonable details about each one and, if not, go research each one
online. That's a lot of work to prevent Microsoft from devolving my
Windows setup into adware and spyware.

I noticed that my previously hidden KB3035583 update (Get Win10 app) has
reappeared (as an optional update) when checking for updates. Guess
Microsoft came out with a new version of it. Users can hide a specific
version of an update but not all future versions of it. Will have to
hide it again. Microsoft has forced users to mistrust Microsoft
regarding just what updates the users really should have versus what
Microsoft wants them to have but which afford no real worth to the user.
