Default Is there a special trick to installing an HP LJ 2100 TN printer on Windows 10?

Tried to install the printer on Windows 10 first, of course.

Then, went to the HP web site second, of course:
http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-las...2100tn-printer

I can find a driver on the web, but who can trust some 3rd-party web site?
http://www.easydriverpro.com/driver-...indows-10.html

Maybe I missed a step?

IIRC I installed mine from Windows Update. After update selected "HP
LaserJet 2100 Series PCL 5" driver.

Maybe I'm just frustrated so if I'm mean below, just take it in stride!

I found that little "Update Windows" button after going to Device Manager
in Windows 10, and then Printers, and then at some point I saw that button.

When I hit it, it only installed ONE printer, which was the wrong HP
printer, but maybe I did something wrong as it took so long to update that
I walked away for an hour.

When I came back, the field was filled out and there was no other printer
choice. Do I have to try it again?

Is there a way to make that darn "Windows Update" printer list button
PERMANEWNT?

Or do I have to wait the hour every time I try it out?
Is it just me or is Windows 10 printer update taking an hour for everyone?

Amazing isn't ;-) MS must use slow electrons...

Not sure...

Same complaint here.

Or do I have to wait the hour every time I try it out?

Now a couple of things about mine that are different that may be
different. My printer is not the N version so I have it connected to
Ubuntu server that has a *parallel* port and I share it via CUPS (my
workstation does not). When I was running Win7 there was no LaserJet
2100 driver, but had to use the LaserJet 2200 Series which worked. With
Win10 Windows Update had the LaserJet 2100 driver I don't recall it
being hard to find in the list. Of course on Linux workstations the
printer installs in seconds, 'cuz Linux is so difficult ;-)

I found the INF file that lists the printer, oem5.inf.

The way I've heard the Legacy printer support thing described,
is "something" has to download when you request it. That might
account for the delay.

You sound very experienced in this.

I do have the "N" which I guess indicates that it's a networked printer
(which is it, as it's tied only to the home router).

And second point is that I think it's hilarious that you found linux to be
easier to install since they do always say that linux is harder than
windows.

I just put on a Ubuntu 64 inside of Windows 10 using VirtualBox freeware,
so, I might try that just to see if I see the same thing and as a
workaround if needed.
https://s10.postimg.org/dsxnui0tl/ub..._windows10.gif

I went to Ubuntu-inside-Windows "System Settings Printers"
https://s24.postimg.org/lyds5zn79/ub...ndows10_01.gif

I clicked "Printers Add Networked Printer Find"
https://s4.postimg.org/63yaqmjl9/ubu...ndows10_02.gif

And Linux found the networked printer, just like that
https://s9.postimg.org/irvvllf7j/ubu...ndows10_03.gif

I hit "Forward" and it said "Select printer from database" where the HP
Laserjet 2100 TN was an option
https://s30.postimg.org/r0z5qgn0x/ub...ndows10_04.gif

There were 8 choices for "drivers" where I'm not sure which is right
HP LaserJet 2100 Foomatic/pxlmono [en] (recommended)
HP LaserJet 2100 2100 Series Postscript [en]
HP LaserJet 2100 2100, hpcups 3.16.3 [en]
HP LaserJet 2100 Series pcl3, hpcups 3.16.3 [en]
HP LaserJet 2100 - Cups+Gutenprint v5.2.11 [en]
HP LaserJet 2100 Foomatic/lj5gray [en]
HP LaserJet 2100 Foomatic/lj4dith [en]
HP LaserJet 2100 Foomatic/ljet4 [en]
https://s3.postimg.org/dwz5hx4ub/ubu...ndows10_05.gif

Then it asked for a name and location where I took the defaults
https://s23.postimg.org/tjqlava8b/ub...ndows10_06.gif

And it asked to print a test page.
https://s12.postimg.org/n1b4dxmr1/ub...ndows10_07.gif

It worked. It was that easy. Wow. Much easier than Windows is so far!
https://s2.postimg.org/dyer26bqh/ubu...ndows10_08.gif

So while installing this very same printer on Windows 10 is miserable, it's
super simple, even for a noob like I am, to install on Linux!

Since I have the hp lj 2100 tn printer working on Linux inside a VM on
Windows 10, do you know if it's easy to select a file on Windows and print
it to the "linux" printer?

That would solve my Windows 10 printer problem in an instant if I can do
that.

The bad news is the first line of that article is
"I had nothing but trouble installing my HP LaserJet 2100 for Windows 10."

Then it goes on to say
"Somehow I stumbled onto the Device Manager and just looked around. I
found my HP LaserJet listed under Print Queues, I highlighted it and then
under Action I selected Add Legacy Hardware, selected Printers from the
list on the following pages, then Used an existing port, selected HP
LaserJet from the list and the rest was magic."

Here's what I tried to install the HP LJ 2100 tn on Windows 10.
Control Panel Devices and Printers Add a printer
I clicked "The printer that I want isn't listed"
I left the button checked "My printer is a little older. Help me find it."
I hit "Next" and up pops the error "No printers were found"
"Windows could not search your network for printers"
https://s9.postimg.org/75sptswpb/win..._printer01.gif

Even though I just easily installed the very same printer on the Ubuntu VM
inside of Windows 10!

Trying a new approach, it just fails in a different way.
Start Settings Control Panel Devices and Printers Add a printer
The printer that I want isn't listed
Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname
Device Type = Autodetect
Hostname or IP address = 192.168.1.11
Port name = (defaults to the same as the hostname above)
[x]Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use
When you hit "Next" up pops the "Add Printer" form.
Press the button "Windows Update" and now it says:
"Windows was unable to get a list of devices from Windows Update.
Please try again later."

I finally gave up and set it up as a "HP LaserJet 22000 Series PCL5"
instead!

The test page worked, so, I presume it's working now.
It's too bad it's impossible to set up this printer on Windows 10 though.

Yep, Linux users are not crazy loons, Linux is that easy. It is
different though is some key areas. It is just that you machine did not
*come* with Linux installed.

I have been having an issue where various networked printers, all HP,
printer queues get stuck...prints just sit there but never print.
Requiring stopping Print Spooler Service, clear the queue, restart
spooler and try again. No such issue with Linux clients...

I used that driver for years in Windows 7. I had no issue. That ol'
