Printer drivers broken.
HP Photosmart D5460, Widows 10 64 bit 1809 Not needed to change printer setting for a while but did just before Christmas. The printer properties were totally screwed, only A4 listed, no headings for orientation etc. Remove all drivers, down loaded latest from HP, reinstalled but still broken. OK the printer is a bit long in the tooth but it only appears to have become broken after the 1809 update. Any help or comments gratefully received. They're fine in Solution Centre Printer Settings but when I try and print from Word, Page Plus or other software the options are garbled. Mike,
Type "reliability" (no quotes) in the search bar and look at that for some clues. You can view by days or weeks (upper right) and when you click on a column, details will be shown below. Also, you said you re-installed the drivers. Try uninstalling the whole package for that printer - not just the drivers and reinstall after shutting down completely and then powering up. This printer is listed on HP's site as being Win10 compatible. Try this troubleshooter: https://support.hp.com/us-en/topic/d...dows-10-update Use the Microsoft troubleshooter. Is this printer on the network, USB cable or wireless? Bob S. |

C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86 HP_750C1.PPD The file is pretty big, and this is a small sampling. A fair bit of this info appears in the printer setup dialog where you can make custom selections. *% The following entries provide information about specific paper keywords. *DefaultImageableArea: Unknown *ImageableArea Letter/US Letter: "18 49 594 743" *ImageableArea LetterFullBleed/Full Bleed US Letter: "49 49 692 841" *ImageableArea Tabloid/Tabloid: "18 49 774 1175" *ImageableArea TabloidFullBleed/Full Bleed Tabloid: "49 49 872 1273" *ImageableArea AnsiC/ANSI C: "18 49 1206 1535" *ImageableArea AnsiD/ANSI D: "18 49 1566 2399" *ImageableArea AnsiE/ANSI E: "18 49 2430 3119" I use the 750C driver as a fake driver I use for "print to file", where the output is PostScript and I can distill that to rather large PDF files (large pages). In the same directory is a HP_750C1.BPD which appears to be a generated binary version of the PPD file. Some print setups trigger off the PPD, rather than characteristics of the driver itself. Things like a "Universal Print Driver", might use a PPD file as a declaration of the actual hardware device. I expect these things differ with printer type (inkjet, laser, impact), so a different tech might not use such a file for all I know. Just a guess - I only own one printer :-) A person might compare a backup image of their OS, to the current folder(s) and see if damage is visible (file missing, radically different file size for something, or modified date changes). Reinstalling drivers doesn't typically help because device information might not get removed/refreshed via the reinstall of the driver. The installation software may choose to "respect" an existing damaged file. Paul |

Sorry but which search bar? Also, you said you re-installed the drivers. I used Revo Uninstaller to allegedly remove everything, re-booted and installed the driver file below from the HP web site then re-booted again PS_SF_03_D5400_NonNet_Full_Win_WW_140_404-4.exe This printer is listed on HP's site as being Win10 compatible. Try this troubleshooter: https://support.hp.com/us-en/topic/d...inting&issue=p rinter-windows-10-update Didn't help. Use the Microsoft troubleshooter. Nor did that. Is this printer on the network, USB cable or wireless? USB. As I said in my OP it had worked previously, the only thing I can think of is that I've upgraded to 1809. Thanks for all who tried to help, I've taken some screen shots and the next step is to contact HP although I doubt they'll be interested in such an ancient printer. When my ink supply is gone I might look for a replacement but they all seem to be 3 in 1 these days which I don't want, I have a good scanner and don't fax. Mike I had much the same problem with an HP inkjet when I switched to windows 8.1, I don't remember the printer model number, but no matter what I did I could not get that printer working again. Removed and redid drivers, tried other model drivers but no dice, Finally in desperation I made a backup of the registry then went in and ripped out every nuance of HP entries I could find, some of which didn't seem to be HP but were. this took a long time as there were tons of entries for HP, If I remember right it took me 2 or 3 hours to get it done. Once done I reinstalled a new copy of the HP package and finally was back to normal. If you try this MAKE SURE you back up the registry Or do an Image back up first as deleting just 1 wrong item can*Bork* your system. Rene |

In "printers & scanners" down the bottom in mine. Let windows select "default" printer. KenW Windows doesn't seem to allow all printers to default all the time. My Canon MG4250 was my default printer but now it says scanner. It does either or both depending on the control panel. I suppose it depends on what the MG4250 was used for previously.
