Bringing back the Start Menu to the desktop is a welcome change. Turning
off the hot corner for the Charms Bar is a debatable point.
Adding additional desktops could be useful.
Overall I don't see these changes as sufficient to shake off the bad
press that win 8 received.

Personally I didn't have a problem with 8.1 - in fact I rather like
it :-)

What do others think of Microsoft's new offering?

I had one thing to say relatively to size in disk. I installed TP build
9841 and Windows Live Mail then updated to build 9860, now I have more
then 27 GB of used space. If I had a 32 GB tablet, I would be compromised.

IIRC You can purge windows updates. Run disk cleanup as admin and
there is an option there.

I trie to run disk cleanup as administrator but didn't find the shortcut, so
I searched and ran disk cleanup from search bar one time then did clean
system files. I supose it's the same as running as admin. I had 23 GB used
space, after disk cleanup I have more 4 GB. Maybe I need to reboot or run
disk cleanup again.

Pretty amazing, isn't it? My wife's netbook runs Debian Linux on a 4gb

If you don't have a 3rd party start menu added, just click on the start
menu icon (desktop view) and start typing "cleanup" in the box. Disk
cleanup shows at the top in the list. Right click it and run as admin
there.
It's "supposed" to clean up the downloads. So they say! :-)

I just looked and my install is only 17G. I don't have Live mail but
that can't add 10G.

Open File Explorer, right-click on your C: drive, and pick Properties. Run
Disk Cleanup from there. It'll come up with a list of things to remove, and
will have a button in the lower left labeled "Clean up system files." That's
the one you want to press to get rid of updates, service pack (version
upgrade), and all the other stuff that wasn't listed on the first screen.

I had already run it before, so now there is only 3MB left to clean, and my
whole drive has 14.5GB used (I have installed a few programs, but nothing
that uses a great amount of space, not even with all of the added together).

I have Win10TP x64 running in VMWare on a Win7HP x86 desktop PC, and it
seems to be pretty smooth (120GB drive space and 1.5GB of RAM). I never
tried that with Win8, so I can't compare the relative difference in the two.
I like the Win10 interface better than Win8 (I use StartIsBack on my Win8
machine). I'm with Big Al on the "hybrid" Start menu, but it's still better
than the native Win8 GUI. Or, at least I like it better, and can live with
it, without using a third-party Start menu. I might hook up another drive
and see how it runs straight from the HDD without being on a virtual
machine. First I have to find the time to do it :-(

False alarm. I saw size in This PC, at C: drive, saw used space instead of free
space. I had about 27 GB free (not used). Sorry for the mistake. I'd like to add
that I can't see no way to right click and run disk cleanup as admin because
there is no shortcut. Neither I know where is the executable file. If I search
on start menu search field, I get icon that doesn't allow right clicking.

In Win 8.1 (which is probably the same) it's %windir%\system32\cleanmgr.exe
Which translates to C:\windows\system32 folder.

If you're still interested right click that file "cleanmgr.exe"

I may be agreeing with you very soon.
My 76 year old neighbour came to see me today. His XP machine had gone
belly up and he wanted to buy a new one. I showed him Win 8.1 on my
machine, which didn't seem to give him the horrors, so I have helped him
to purchase a new desktop machine.

The fun starts tomorrow when it arrives. I will have to guide him through

Boot to desktop and add classic shell and I think you're 90% of the way home.
I've been on 8.1 for over 2 years. Installed it day one. Can't live without it.

I was thinking of the initial set up eg Microsoft account/local login.
Will his old printer work with 8.1? Getting his materials transferred
from the old XP machine. etc
Should keep me out of mischief for a while :-)

Depends on how old the printer is, make, model, etc. Check the
manufacturer's website and see if they have Win8x drivers listed for it.

I agree with Big Al- set up Classic Shell or one of the other 3rd party
Start menu programs and he may not notice much difference. I use
StartIsBack on my 8.1 laptop, and there is virtually no difference between
it and my Win7 desktop, which looks pretty much like XP thanks to Classic
Shell.

If he's like some of the XP people I've dealt with (and it's been a while),
the biggest obstacle they had was changing email programs. No matter what, I
think you do have a fun few days coming up :-)

I had one thing to say relatively to size in disk. I installed TP
build 9841 and Windows Live Mail then updated to build 9860, now I
have more then 27 GB of used space. If I had a 32 GB tablet, I would
be compromised.

Would be interesting to know what size disk.
