You better take an other hobby, computing is clearly not your type.
Each time you are the cause of all your problems (PEBKAC).
Don't worry: Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em.

He uses ESATA to extend the number of disks
his system supports. This means he has some
hotplug options.

Should have, and use it, YM.

A danger with hotplug, is forgetting to use the
Safely Remove, before pulling the cable.

Indeed.

Thank you for all replies.

I plan to do a macrium backup of this damaged disk (macrium recognizes
it as an "unformatted primary") but I have to buy a 3TB HDD to contain
all the 1.8TG of data on it. I'll report back later after I buy
this HDD.

Take note of the prices carefully, and the
incremental cost of extra space, before deciding
on what hard drive to buy. The answer doesn't stand
still, and is worth a few moments of checking.

The lowest capacity of SATA drive you can get now
(at 3.5"), should be 1TB. That would be a single platter
drive.

There are some external drives at 2.5" for the drive mechanism,
where the drive is 15mm tall. That's too big to fit in a laptop,
and the drives are only made for usage in external enclosures. Those
are available at up to 2TB of space. So if you were short of space
for this storage solution, that's an option.

But the best dollar value is likely to be some size of 3.5" drive.

Always check the reviews to see what the average user thinks of
the product you're looking at. I've avoided a lot of bad drives,
by using those reviews.

The very last drive I bought, the review says "the drive makes
a funny noise when it shuts down". And damn if my drive doesn't
make that noise. It sounds like an improperly designed FDB
motor bearing. I gather all the drives of that model, sound
the same way. The more noise a drive makes, the more likely
it is to wear out prematurely.

I'll see if the 3TB are available with extended warranty. 1TB is
becoming very small these days!

I hope you are not missing any of your medications. 1TB is more than
enough for us but we don't download any useless pirated software like you.

If you're into digital photography these days, 1TB soon becomes
"small".

......uh? Software? I have a huge allocation from my ISP, so I download
books, literature, comics, movies, pretty images, operas, cantatas,
artworks, historic photos, GIFs, and more interesting images. Like
Alexander I weep because there are no more sites to conquer!

1TB? There is much under heaven outside your play-pen!

+1. I have 25TB storage on this PC I'm typing on now, 91% full.

Ignore "Good Guy" - he's a waste of oxygen.

The advice you've been given to make a copy of your troublesome disk
before working on it is good, although I'd be inclined to use something
more low-level like dd under Linux to make an image of the entire disk.

I can echo the recommendations for TestDIsk. It's got me out of the
mierda a few times.

There should be two sets of data: really important personal data and
less important collection. Back up the important set first!
