Extra Windows in File Explorer
This may have been asked before - I hope not.
I have had this problem for a while, and it is exaspirating. Every time I use File Explorer to look at the content of a folder, I get two folders - the second sometimes a dupe of the first. It is usually smaller and quite useless I think - and I have to delete it every time. It did not always do that - so there must be some setting to control this. Can anyone weigh in? Tom |

If it's still there, try this; Click on Organize on left top corner of Win Explorer; select Folder and search options; under General choose open each folder in same window; click on Apply and click on OK. Ed tThanks. I checked and I already have that option checked. Tom |

Do you mean that two windows open? or that a second folder is created in the folder that you are examining Thanks for response. The first. It is usually smaller and quite useless I think - and I have to delete it every time. Do you actually delete it using the Delete key or the delete command in the contect menu? Or do you click X to close the window? The last. Tom |

Or alternately, open a Command Prompt window, and "dir" the offending view you're trying to look at. Just in case it's a file name issue. cd /d C:\path\to\offender dir filenames.txt notepad filenames.txt and see if there is anything strange, like a space at the end of a filename. In other words, some item that was created by a web browser, that happens to violate some well-known rule about File Explorer. Paul |

Tom Run the system file checker for corrupted files and DLLS; Sfc /scannow will inspect all of the important Windows files on your computer, including Windows DLL files. If System File Checker finds an issue with any of these protected files, it will replace it. Follow the steps: Press Windows key + X and select Command prompt (Admin). At the Command Prompt, type: sfc/scannow Ed Did it. Found no 'integrity violations'. Thanks Tom |

Paul Hi Paul - Triggered by what you said, I brought up file explorer, showing my main C drive and three data drives. I clicked on all four one at a time and they each all showed the spurious second window. That tells me the problem must not be triggered by some folder/file name since the contents of the drives are different and are non co-habitant. Strange for sure. The second window always seems to show all the folder names and their sizes for the selected folder name - in this case c:\ I can x-out of the second windows each time, but it is getting to be a pita. Tom I found a reference here to OneDrive being a factor. Or rather, the accidental placement of a certain folder into a OneDrive storage area. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...8-ff4a8a403ed6 And crazy stuff like that happens all the time... if you have a mouse with malfunctioning mouse buttons on it. You can be dragging something, the mouse drops it, and you go "now where did that go...". And the answer is, it went somewhere it shouldn't have gone. So if you have a worn mouse like I use, that could help explain it. How something could end up tossed into a location you might not normally use. Paul |

Tom You can upload here. http://postimage.org/index.php?um=flash The tricky part, is after the upload finished, you have to select a link (by copying it), from the URL list at the bottom of the page. What you don't want is a "thumbnail", because the image is too small. What I do, is use two browsers. In one browser, I upload my sample image. Then, I copy the URL into the second browser, and confirm the image is big enough and I can see it. Once I've verified the image is good, I put it in a posting. HTH, Paul |

Try looking at: https://s13.postimg.org/565cyd6yf/aaaaaaa.jpg Tom This is the closest match so far. http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-vi...-8-1-explorer/ http://foldersize.sourceforge.net/ It's possible you had that installed on the OS, before you did an Upgrade Install ? Notice that the window created, isn't an exact match, as the Title isn't centered. ******* So now you can go to Control Panels : Programs and Features and check for signs it is present/installed. You could also look in one of the Program Files directories, if you run out of other places to check. If you no longer have a Control Panel in the right-click of start, you can type "Control" into the Cortana Search Hole, or even try running "control" as an executable, and that may give you a Control Panel to play with. Then look in Programs and Features. I usually pin my Control Panel to the Task Bar, so I "won't lose it". ******* If you're still stumped for a way to stop it, look through the Autoruns window, and see if it's a startup item. This tool offers tick boxes for (attempting) to stop pests of various sorts. This tool is no match for malware though, which will just undo whatever this program does for you. This mainly helps with "non-aggressive" software. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...rnals/bb963902 The thing is unlikely to be an on-demand Shell Extension, because you'd have to do something with the mouse to get it to appear. Since it seems to show up all the time, it could well be using some other mechanism. Nirsoft makes a tool for viewing Shell Extensions. (Download is around 85% down the page...) http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html Paul |
