Default Default web browser and email ignored

I can't set a default web browser and email program in Windows 10.

For the browser, Opera is selected in settings, yet certain things like clicking an advert on one of the Microsoft lock screen pictures uses Edge!

For the email, when I try to select Opera Mail in settings, it's not in the list! So I'm stuck with Windows Mail, which I've never used and never set up, so clicking an email link on a web page opens Windows Mail which can't send it.

Which means the Opera Mail installer did not set up the registry settings
to say that Opera Mail is available as a default email program in Win10.

No, it's a random scenic picture, and I can click to see where it is.

You have set a default web browser, but "default" does not mean "mandatory".

Try these two tests:

1) Right-click on the Win 10 start menu icon, choose "Run", and enter
this in the "Open" box:

http://www.opera.com/

The web page opens in your default browser, Opera.

2) Right-click on the Win 10 start menu icon, choose "Run", and now
enter this in the "Open" box:

iexplore.exe http://www.opera.com/

The web page opens in the specified browser, iexplore.exe (Internet Explorer).

Setting a default web browser did not override the choice of iexplore.exe
in test #2 above.

My mail/news program Forte Agent lets me specify a web browser in its
settings. And if I do so, clicking a link in Forte Agent will use that
web browser instead of the Windows default. From your description, it
appears that the Microsoft lock screen ads explicitly specify Edge.

Thanks - this one seems to have worked - there's an entry in the default programs control panel now anyway. Since Opera is installed in a silly place on my computer (under users/appdata) I edited the reg file with search and replace in notepad rather than risk reinstalling and messing up my mail folders as Opera is renowned for making a hash of its data.

Know of a "mail me" link somewhere on the internet I can test it with? I can't remember what it was I clicked last time.

Typical Microsoft.
