Default Programs, File Associations and the Open With List
On a Win 8 laptop, almost none of the programs I've installed (Win
7-type and not Win 8 apps) appear in the list of Default Programs or in the Open With list. If I use the "More options" button of "Open With", and scroll down to "Look for another app on this PC", I can navigate to one of my self-installed programs and select it, BUT... Win 8 ignores it! It doesn't open the file with the selected program and doesn't make the selected program the default application!! How can I fix this? |

It doesn't open the file with the selected program and doesn't make the selected program the default application!! How can I fix this? The v4.0 update of OpenOffice.blah exhibited that behavior... They have fixed it with the updated v4.0.1... (They moved from Oracle to Apache since v3.4.1 - and their quality control department was totally restaffed with pretty ladies sporting big, supple, natural boobies in tight geek sweaters or low-cleavage tube-tops, thus they missed a line of code which only effected certain computer configurations.) Could be several things, especially if you're generalizing an isolated file to overall behavior of Windows[8]. Also, a relevant factor may well be whether you're flying a 32-bit or 64-bit version of the OS and what program you actually installed along with which options you chose to select on install. And then if you've rebooted since you noticed the behavior. It also could be in your Administrative Tools | Policies... unless you've successfully done this before with other file types on this OS configuration since the last Windows Update Terrible Tuesday Rodeo. I'd first unstall the relevant program; make sure I had the most recent correct version downloaded; reboot; then, reinstall... and reboot as required or prompted. Shoot, depending on the program, I might just reboot to totally rule that as an issue out before I started investigating. -- I AM Bucky Breeder, (*(^; and , Skittles is the wholesome American snacky-time treat for pretty young girls (and many of the basic USDA food groups if you count artificial flavoring as vegetables): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX-gW4otXfI ("This is gonna be GREAT for YOUR complexion!") |

One has Windows 8 programs and one has X86 programs. I beleive this is 64 and 32 bit programs. One of the frustrations of Windows 8 is similar things are distributed over a wide area. |

The program folders, 'Program Files' and 'Program Files (x86)' has no relevance to the op's concern about programs not appearing as items the list of Default programs. The two folders are unique to a 64 bit o/s (not just Win8 but also Win7). i.e. a 32 bit o/s will only have one folder 'Program Files'. -- ...winston msft mvp consumer apps |
