Voice Conversations
Greetings John,
There are a few issues with satellite-based internet access and any VoIP (Voice over IP) service. There have been reports with Direcway using NAT to connect their users (basically sharing a public IP address over multiple subscribers, a popular thing among wireless internet providers). He can check if they're using NAT by clicking Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, and then Network Connections. Double-click the internet connection, and choose the support tab. Make a note of your IP address. Then go to http://www.whatismyip.com, and see if the two IPs match -- if they do, then it's a public IP. If they don't match (and the IP address begins with 192, 172, 10, etc.), then the connection is probably NAT'd. Also, the delays involved with sending data from the satellite, to the internet and back usually amounts to a few seconds and under voice conversations, this can make it almost unusable. ____________________________________________ Jonathan Kay Windows MVP, Messenger Associate Expert http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/ Messenger Resources - http://messenger.jonathankay.com "John Bakkila" wrote in message ... My cousin and I never had a problem initiating a voice conversation using Windows Messenger, or even MSN messenger until he got a satellite internet service (Direct Way offered through DirectTV). Our voice conversations stopped working soon after (if not right when) the satellite service was initiated. I understand that uploading is slower than downloading, but should this effect the voice option in Windows messenger? Does this effect it? Is there a solution for this? Has anyone else experienced this probelm? |
