Word Starter 2010 prints in grey, not black
This is of little importance compared to my internet connection but I
keep forgetting to ask and I just remembered: I needed to print a simple text letter and used Notepad++ and it printed a header with the file name and the date. I didnt' want all that, so copied the file to Word Starter 2010, which came with Windows, Win10 I believe. I would like to use Word a lot more because even the starter version has loads of features. But when I printed it, it was grey instead of black and hard to read. If not grey, some lighter color than full black. I never changed any defaults. Is there some setting to get it to black? I googled and got only one hit, but it was right on the money. It had one long erudite answer that depended on getting an error message that I never get. And the second short answer was that the normal template was corrupted, to rename it, and Word would make a new one. When I used Everything to find the file Ifound that it, normal.dotm , had already been renamed and a new one created in November of 2016. I bought this used but I'm not sure if was summer of 2016 or 2017. Darn, I made notes about everything, except the date I bought it. But if I owned it in November of 2016, I certainly didn't rename the file to .old . I renamed it again, restarted word, and brought up a file, but I'm thinking it won't recreate the format until I try to print something. I'll look for something to print. |

@bigfoot.com says... I needed to print a simple text letter and used Notepad++ and it printed a header with the file name and the date. I'm not sure how to solve your problem, but you can tell Notepad not to print headers/footers. It's an option. You don't have a laser printer in "toner save" mode do you? In Word, you should be able to highlight the text, right-click, and set the color. Does it show as black or something else? |

If there were automatic updates since then, I installed them. I'll check. Busy now, it will take me a few days. Okay, there is a section of the ribbon labeled Font underneath, and from left to right is B I U abc x x2 A abc A ^ and underlining the last A is a short red line. The arrow on the right end points down (not up like I show it here) and when I click on that, the box's top line has a black square (definitely not grey) and says Automatic. But when I click on that black square, the line underneath the A changes to black. When I do it again and click on red or green, the line under the A changes to red or green, even though the little box stays black. So it was red when I last printed, but even though I had all 3 colors of ink, it didn't come out red. It came out grey!!!! ?? And why was the line red when the top line of that box showed a black square? And I never set anything to red, certainly not this file and never before that either. I looked in help and can't find anything, except for one very confusing thing: When I search Help under automatic, I get a list of 5 choices including the bottom one which is Set the Default Font. The picture of the font area of the ribbon shows the A with a RED underline, as if that is the default. How could red possibly be the MS default and why didn't it print in red if the underline was red???? Thanks again. |

I don't normally want bold print. To the right halfway across the page it does show the capital A with a red line underneath it. Yet the text is displayed in black. What does the red line mean then? Is there some setting to get it to black? Yes. See the picture above. html crap snipped ;-) . |

See this pictu [ alt-no ] https://i.imgur.com/h91eZt7.png Thanks. But here the color is part of the font, Ariel Black. Most fonts don't specify a color and here it means that it's bold. I think "Arial Black" is an unfortunate choice of name. I think the 'Black' is meant to emphasize that the font is a very thick font. You don't have to print only in black. I will try to post a print sample using Aria Black, which shows 8 shades of black ranging in density from 10% - 80%. I would normally call these colors 'grey' although at 80% it looks very close to black. On the same print sample you will see a variety of other colors (seven in this sample) but all in the same font. Print Sample: https://imgur.com/fk45krM I don't normally want bold print. To change fonts, just go to the font selector box (highlighted in the 'imgur' h91eZt7.PNG image) and click on the pointer which is in the same box as the font name and you should get a selection of fonts to choose from. Similar for choosing the font size. To the right halfway across the page it does show the capital A with a red line underneath it. Yet the text is displayed in black. What does the red line mean then? It means that if you click on that capital 'A' you will get red text. If you want to avoid that color change, I would suggest that you click on the "down" arrow to the right of 'A' and then select the 'black' color. Is there some setting to get it to black? Yes. See the picture above. html crap snipped ;-) . |
