Default MS store causing trouble

I've used the MS store for the first time tonight, and it's already
causing lots of trouble.

All I did is install Netflix, then look at their list of other "apps"***
and install Online Radio -- Free LIve FM and AM**

But I looked at the list of "All owned", presumably owned by me, and it
didn't include Netflix but it did include Candy Crush Saga, which it
claimed I had purchased moments ago. I don't want it and I certainly
don't want to pay for it, and I really really don't like them claiming
that a dl'd it or that I agreed to puchase it.

Then I looked at Installed and it has 17 installed "apps", many of which
I don't want. All had modify dates within the last 11 days.

***I was very disappointed in their list, which is nowhere near as good
as the PlayStore list. The MS list only has 88 "apps" and they are no
better, or worse, than the PlayStore has. Many have included
advertising and the number of reviews is a pittance compared to most of
the playstore. Plus, maybe most important, there is barely any
description before you install the app.

**I have Radiomaximus which is great, and also allows on-line recording,
and for the modest purchase price allows online recording by timer. It
has stations included from all over the world, labeled by country and
type of station, but I'm always interested in more stations.

No idea if that means you looked are recommendations by Microsoft's
Store ("People also like" list at the bottom of an app's description) or
some ad by the Netflix app.

But I looked at the list of "All owned", presumably owned by me, and it

Candy Crush comes pre-installed in every Windows 10 installation, along
with Microsoft's Solitaire Collection. I uninstalled both. Candy Crush
is inane, and their Solitaire Collection is lureware to get you to pay
for more games (well, Candy Crush is lureware, too).

Was this the first time you use the Store app on Windows 10 to visit
Microsoft's Store? Maybe that's why it thinks you just bought Candy
Crush because it was the first time their Store could inventory your
system.

I uninstalled Candy Crush (and, as I recall, some other inane game)
after doing a fresh install of Windows 10 Home x64, so it wasn't on my
computer when I later (many months later) decided to run the Store app
that also comes in Windows 10.

The only WinRT/UWP app that I remember getting from their Store is for
Dropbox. Their web site doesn't list anything that I've ordered.
Perhaps the only thing they track is what you paid for, not what you
downloaded and installed (since that category isn't listed when I go to
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/b/home, login, and click on my
name to check my Order History). Maybe if you don't buy something from
there that lets Microsoft take a slice of the transaction then they
don't bother tracking the free stuff using their web site.

I then opened the Store app that comes in Windows 10. Yep, lots listed
there and mostly stuff that already comes in Windows 10, like (they
don't sort the list by name):

Your Phone
Spotify Music
Dropbox (I remembered downloading that one)
Microsoft To-Do (yep, now I remember downloading that one, too)
Mixed Reality Portal
Paint 3D
3D Viewer
XBox Game Bar
Windows Alarms
PureText (another that I now remember downloading)
Windows Voice
Windows Maps
Windows Calculator
Skype
Microsoft Messaging
Microsoft Sticky Notes
Mail and Calendar
OneNote (I probably downloaded that one)
Paint3D
Office (a weblink to their Office site, not a crippled Office suite)
Get Help
Web Media Extensions
Microsoft Store
Snip & Sketch
HEIF Image Extensions
Movies & TV
Feedback Hub
Xbox Identity Provider
Microsoft People
MSN Weather
Microsoft Photos
App Installer

Yep, other than the ones that I knew or got prodded to remember that I
had downloaded, all those apps are bundled in Windows 10. 3 apps were
installed by me. 28 apps came bundled in Windows (would've been more if
I still have the pre-installed inane games installed). How could you
not know they were already there when you got your new Win10 computer?

Some aren't listed because I uninstalled them almost as soon as I
started tweaking the OS. I didn't need any of the XBox /stuff/, but
they won't let me uninstall the XBox Game Bar.

You've never bothered looking at the alphabetized list in the Start menu
to see all the fluff that comes pre-installed in Windows 10?

and install Online Radio -- Free LIve FM and AM**

This one?

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/on...m/9n4hx2x3f88h

URLs help to distinguish which app you are talking about because names
are often too vague.

So, you installed an app just because it got pushed at you? You don't
investigate them first, see the reviews, check what other users or
reviewers recommend, and choose to get one of those?

***I was very disappointed in their list, which is nowhere near as
good as the PlayStore list. The MS list only has 88 "apps" and they
are no better, or worse, than the PlayStore has. Many have included
advertising and the number of reviews is a pittance compared to most
of the playstore. Plus, maybe most important, there is barely any
description before you install the app.

You really go there to have them push at you what they want you to use?
The web site has more screen space than the Store app. I'm pretty sure
whatever you see at the web site you can search on and find using the
Store app. You should encounter a need, do the research to see which
free apps are best, perhaps decide which paid apps would better match
your criteria (since most of the free apps are adware, which is the same
way on Google's Play Store for Android and Chrome Store), and then go
find that app. Dumping every app onto your computer that anyone pushes
at you is guaranteed to waste your disk space with apps you'll never or
rarely use or quit using after a short trial period.

**I have Radiomaximus which is great, and also allows on-line
recording, and for the modest purchase price allows online recording
by timer. It has stations included from all over the world, labeled

Where'd you find that one? It's not at Microsoft's app Store.

http://www.raimersoft.com/radiomaximus.html

Doesn't look like a WinRT/UWP app. Looks like a Win32 program. You're
mixing apps with programs.

Netflix or MS Store? So far you're not missing much with either.

I just have a 30 days free trial (and I think they only gave me 28 days)
and if I like it enough, I'll extend for a month, or two, but so far
it's a nuisance.

The rewinding with the app so far is no better than with the webpage.

In addition, clicking the mouse with the cursor anywhere on the screen
worked in the webpage to pause or play. It has to be on the play or
pause button on with the app.

WRT the app, while I'm in the process of finding my list of movies/tv
shows and looking for the next episode, the app plays both video and
sound from some movie they're recommending that I have no interest in.
And I wanted to rewind a little at the end of an episode to see who it
had been dedicated to, but skipping on to the next episode overlay
everything. Everything with them is promotion now.

Usually I have a radio or web-radio on and it would interfere with what
I'm listening to. I don't turn off my radio until I have something else
started.

I have to press the left arrow twice for it to rewind -- the first press
does nothing -- but after that I think it's the same.

OTOH, the webpage had a box "Add to your list +" and I clicked on the
plus sign and it said "Deleting", and it deleted one of the 3 items I
had in my list. Earlier I went from 3 to 1 for some unknown reason. (I
had restored the 2 that disappeared.)

There might be more differences but I just had time etc. to watch
starting 10 minutes ago.

But I can tellyou that unless I find something much better about the app
than the webpage, I'm going back to the webpage. Pretty sure it uses
less resources since FFox is already open, the one main thing I didn't
like is no better in the app, and more importantly, usage is different
and I don't want to have to learn two sets of rules.

*******

https://www.tenforums.com/software-a...streaming.html

"Netflix simultaneously depress the Shift, Crtl, Alt and S keys

This didn't do anything. ;-(

Both the page and the app don't show a Help button. And they have no
Settings.

The other "app" in installed tonight, Online Radio Free live FM AM, is
not good either. It has no Help and no Settings that I've found and
it's nowhere near as, 100 times less, versatile as RadioMaximus.

It has "Recomended" which show no pattern and must be just the ones that
paid them.

It has Favorite which so far is empty.

It does have Genres. That's good. I want something to fall asleep to
when all the talk radio is boring, violent (about sex crimes or
something), or hostile. So it has Relax, Relaxing music, but I found it
too fast and too loud. One station, Ambient Sleeping Pill did nothing
but rumble for 3 minutes. Gimme a break It had Cherie FM Ballads and 4
other stations, that's all.
It has Romantic, and under that is again Cherie FM Ballads which I
played for 30 minutes and I don't think I heard a single ballad. And it
Radio Soft which was not soft IMO and the spoken words were in
Scandinavian or German. This category has only 5 stations total.

and then the highest bandwidth for the buffering rate.

Once you see that the higher buffering rate is in effect, move
the video slider back to the starting point to restart the video.

The video should now play and buffer at the higher rate that

Couldn't even get the first step to work. next time I reastart windows,
I'll do Netflix first before FFox, Eudora, or Agent, and maybe it will
work like it says to.

That's only in the App.

That's great Andy. Thanks (and I read your next post too.)

I'll do it tomorrow when I'm not sleepy.

This is what I meant in my post a minute ago in this thread that it's

Welcome to windows bloat! You'll probably have several other games too. You
didn't buy them; they just come with windows. I was most annoyed when I
first installed Windows 10 as one of the first things it did was update all
these stupid programs I never wanted in the first place. Deleted them
straight away.

I guess this is not fair. Netflix has annoyances, like a webpage
designed by an advertising agent instead of a programmer, but it does
have a very large number of movies and tv shows, including foreign ones
with subtites and after the free 30 days it's 8 or 9 dollar a month.

For twice that price, I can watch 4 shows at once.

When I got back from my long trip, I couldnt' find the remote control
tot he DVDR and could only watch whatever station the timer recorded
something on. It went back and forth for 5 days so it depended on what
time of day I turned it on. After weeks Icame across the remote so
everything I recorded while away and after I got back, I have to watch
eventually, plus newsgroups. I just don't have enough time for many
netflix flicks.

I don't have this. In fact, I don't have the CloudContent subkey. I
uninstalled Candy Crush quite a long time ago in a prior build. That
build lasted 4 months, Candy Crush was uninstalled pretty quick, like
after updating Windows 10 (1809), and Candy Crush never came back.
Alas, the mobo had firmware issues with driver installs (the system
would instantly hang), so the mobo had to get replaced (and that same
brand and model worked fine for driver installs). In the next build
(1903), it's only about 2 weeks old, Candy Crush was uninstalled, still
hasn't come back. With Candy Crush, I also uninstalled Microsoft's
Solitaire collection which was lureware, and tons of glitz that
interferred with getting to and playing the games. That never came
back, either.

Any idea how long it takes Microsoft to reinstall the uninstalled fluff
apps? I thought Microsoft was pushing that back on their user's
computers in about 1 to 2 days. According to some author's on how to
disable the auto-reinstall, they said there was an App Updater startup
program (Task Manager - Startup tab). It's not in my setup. That's
not the same as App Installer which is to WinRT/UWP apps what MSI is to
Win32 programs.

Just because you create a registry entry that used to work doesn't mean
it continues to work. I'm not sure the CloudContent subkey is honored
anymore.

https://www.howtogeek.com/248177/wha...ersary-update/
Some useful group policy options no longer function on Windows 10
Professional and require Windows 10 Enterprise or Education. These
include the ability to disable the lock screen, tips, and ´Microsoft
consumer experience¡ that downloads apps like Candy Crush Saga.

Well, if they're ****ing over Pro users, and since Home users are
considered by Microsoft as fair game for beta testing, seems they'd do
the same with their Home edition.

I didn't see CandyCrush return, and I never created nor does exist the
CloudContent subkey with its DisableWindowsConsumerFeatures data item
set to 1 in my setup. I wonder if this registry key and other schemes
to decrapify Windows 10 still apply. Lots of old info continues to get
proliferated (and plagarized) long after it is inapplicable.

Microsoft said "as an added bonus, Candy Crush Saga will automatically
be installed for customers that upgrade to or download Windows 10 for
periods of time following the game launch." Well, launches expires, so
maybe the push is over for Candy Crush.

It's gone.
https://mspoweruser.com/rejoice-wind...-finally-gone/

Then 10 days later:

It's back.

No, you have to create the entries, rather than just set them.

I think it tends to affect Home edition, but seems to vary depending on
the OEM, laptops bought from PCworld etc seem worse, and if you remove
it, it just re-installs it.

Any idea how long it takes Microsoft to reinstall the uninstalled fluff
apps?

I've seen it come back in minutes.

I'm not sure the CloudContent subkey is honored
anymore.

who knows, the landscape changes every 6 months now.

I just read that MS are planning to remove Paint
and Wordpad. I guess that makes sense. It's a gradual
transformation from a productivity device to a services
kiosk. Happy shopping.

I'm a little surprised, though, that no legal authorities
or competing companies are complaining about them including
XBox, Office, Skype, etc. For a long time they were careful
not to bundle competitive software. Now they're loading
the system with it, and I saw recently that their Windows
Essentials security software is now top-rated.

I remember reading in the past about Microsoft removing Paint, but it
remained. I don't recall seeing they were going to remove WordPad.

The "Office" that comes in Windows 10 is neither a program nor an app.
It is a webcentric portal to their live.com/office.com services. When I
go into the Word component of the Office portal app, I can indeed create
a new document but it'll be in the OneDrive component of their online
service. OneDrive is their web file manager for their web apps in
online Office. If you don't mind having all your docs up on their
servers (i.e., in the cloud) then you get full functionality ... well,
you get what their online Office apps will give you (the same as if you
want to

While I can use their webclient to use online Word, the local "Office"
portal app has problems retrieving templates. It says "We're having
trouble getting templates. Please try again later." The templates are
shown when I use their webclient. I haven't compared the free Word,
Excel, and PowerPoint apps on my Android smartphone to the online Office
apps to see how they compare for feature sets.

I don't know that anyone is trying to sue Microsoft over having online
services that compete with there own similar online services. Google
has their online office webapps, too.

I suppose they can argue "Hey, we're not just pre-loading apps and links
to our services but also for 3rd parties", like maybe while drowing in
bundled superfluous apps you won't notice some are for Microsoft.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/micr...or-windows-10/

Back in Dec 2018, the portal app was usable by those that had an Office
365 account. Not sure why you'd care about the portal app if you had an
Office 365 subscription since that gave you the full suite of local
programs (run on your PC and docs are local unless you choose to put
them into the local OneDrive folder to sync to your online account).
Maybe it was to let users access via portal their Office 365
subscription on the web on other Win10 hosts where the Office suite
wasn't installed. If I was wandering between hosts, especially not
owned by me, I'd probably just use their webclients (via web browser).

The editor added a note to the above article saying "The Office app for
Windows 10 is now available to anyone with a Microsoft Account." I used
to have an Office 365 subscription but let it expire about 2 months ago,
yet I can use the Office portal app in Windows 10. So, it appears
Microsoft lifted the Office 365 subscription requirement to let their
portal app display their web services.

Their web apps don't have all the functionality compared to their suite
of local programs. Doesn't take long to realize their Outlook web app
falls short of Outlook 2016/2019, but it's good enough for many users.

I almost thinking Microsoft intends to dump their Office software and go
with a portal to their free online Office services. I've read that
Microsoft is planning to discontinue the Outlook program, so you're
stuck using their portal app or a web browser to their web apps. Well,
it won't take long for many users to run out of space with the initial
starter quota of only 5GB in the OneDrive service. Microsoft will turn
from making money on the software to making money on their services,
especially by selling more storage quota.

Google starts you with, I think, 15GB for a starter quota. You can buy
more but apparently you can earn more over time. I've never paid
anything for more storage quota at Google [Drive] yet they've gradually
upped me to 115GB. While I have some data-only backups stored at Google
Drive (and photos where they are allowed to resize don't count against
the quota, so all my pics there are stored for free), I rarely use
OneDrive because its storage quota is small. About the only time I used
OneDrive is when I want a file accessible via the web to another host.
I even have a Dropbox account with its measly 2GB storage quota (no, I'm
not spamming them to earn more quota that way) which is only used to put
online files or images that I share, like when I take a screenshot,
share it, and show a URL to it to someone else, but those files don't
last very long there.

I've not gotten into gamining consoles, so I'm uneducated as to who are
the Xbox competitors unless I go researching on the web. Since it seems
the Win10 Xbox apps are to interface with their Xbox console, I don't
see how those apps could be construed as competitive. Microsoft
providing apps to Microsoft stuff.

I haven't bother using Windows Essentials (or whatever it was called
back then) since a short trial back in Windows 7 (I skipped Vista and
never bothered with 8). It was Microsoft's answer to their Defender
which was, at that time, only an anti-spyware detector. They didn't add
anti-virus protection until Defender in Windows 8. According to the
comparatives, Defender (in 8 and 10) comes within a percentage or two of
Avast and Avira. Their Fortinet was considered good before, so they
could migrate that technology minus domain support, IT management, and
all the enterprise-only features over to the consumer-grade Defender.

Actually I misspoke. I looked up the link to post and realized
that what they said is Paint and Wordpad will be removable,
not removed. And they'll be added to the store.

Interesting description you gave of Office. I knew about
MS Office. I knew about Office 365. I didn't know there
was a half-assed, free web portal office. I assume you're using
this stuff mostly out of curiosity. I don't see why anyone
would normally want to use that portal or Google docs, much
less both. But I have noticed that Google docs is getting
very popular. People send links to me. But I can't see
anything. I'm not about to let Google run script on my
machine. The source code for a Google doc link is not a webpage
in any normal sense. It's a piece of javascript software. I don't
even know whether Google would require me to sign up in
order to see these docs. And I'm not curious to find out. I
just tell people that if they want me to see their file then
they'll have to send me their file.

Maybe the Google docs popularity is due to so much being
done on phones? It doesn't make sense to me, letting sleazy,
spyware companies own both your software and your files,
when things like Libre Office are free.

The same for the Mail, People, and Calendar apps bundled with Win10.
Maybe they noticed all the articles on how to use Powershell to remove
packages, so making an app uninstallable was a wasted effort to keep it
installed.

Mostly I looked at using their online web apps via local app portal to
see how much they were usabled. Well, I had already used their online
web apps before and was disappointed, so no different using a portal to
them. I have trialed alternates of MS Office but gave up on them for
various reasons. I currently have LibreOffice installed but I'm getting
weary of digging around trying to find a function that's stuffed
somewhere that doesn't make sense. They tried adding their own ribbon
toolbar (aka ribbonbar) but it's not that intelligent and is beta. I
had Office 365 and might go back to it, as I find the Mail, Calendar,
and People WinRT/UWP apps to be just minimally acceptable. Now that
some others in the family are interested in getting later versions of MS
Office, the cost per person is lower than just me buying an Office 365.
Last time it took awhile to find a reputable seller but found someone at
eBay that sold the 1-year subscription cards at $33 apiece (I bought 3
to get a 3-year subscription term). I'm sure not paying Microsoft's $99
price per card per year. The 1 TB storage quota was nice, though.
