W10 won't boot!
I have a remote friend whose W10 drive will no longer boot. He is
upset because he has no image backup. He should be. He has no W10 install disk since he got his W10 via MS's 'free' upgrade from W7 - no longer available of course. He can read the drive, and the files/folders thereon, from an old W7 drive. Anyway - can anyone suggest somethng he can try in order to make it usable again? I thought Hirens might, but I guess not. Thanks Johnny |

If nothing else he can download the free Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft and do a fresh install. Microsoft should recognise his machine as being validated and not ask for an install key. Thanks Johnny Thanks I forwarded your response. Johnny |

MS Edge and Google Chrome?
Neither my MS Edge nor my Google Chrome will start up in my W10 this
AM. Were okay yesterday. They both hang when I open either, and eventually time out. OTOH my other internet operations seem ok - my Eudora email, my OEClassic email, this newsgroup app, etc. Task manager shows nothing that I see. I tried my other W10 PC on same router connection and all is fine. I wonder what to do? Thanks Sam |

Using d/l of free W10 now ( W10 won't boot!)

Anyway - can anyone suggest somethng he can try in order to make it usable again? I thought Hirens might, but I guess not. Thanks Johnny When the W7 to W10 Free Upgrade was done, a Digital Entitlement was recorded on a Microsoft server. That uses a hash of the hardware, to generate a license key for Windows 10. If he installs the same trim level of OS, during the install process the machine will contact that server, and be able to "pull" the license key and prove a license exists. This means, for a Free Upgrade user, they don't have to use MagicJellyBean to find the key. They can just reinstall, and the installer will figure out what the license key is. [...] I d/l the free W7 to W10 ISO, burned the DVD, but did not install W10. If I use it to install W10 now, will it still do the auto-magic licensing thing? TIA. I think even the Accessibility thing is at an end. But we won't know unless you test it :-) Back up before you try your current OS. It's faster to restore from a backup, than to wait an hour for a rollback operation (on a Revert). The thing is, I can't test it, unless I have starting materials to burn. And I've got no copy of Win7 where Win10 hasn't seen the key (and thus, noted on the Microsoft server already). Since you have a Win7 for which no Digital Entitlement has been generated yet, that would make your setup a valid test case (today). If it doesn't work, it's not a big deal. winver # gives basic installed version info slmgr /dlv # shows activation status, would show "grace period" # if it did not automatically activate. You should Google on "Accessibility", as you need to present evidence you're a Win7 user with Accessibility issues, to fit with the "after-the-free-period" set of requirements. Microsoft pretended the free upgrade was extended, so they could offer freebies to people who could test their Accessibility interface. You may find Cortana talking to you at some point, late in the install cycle. Clicking the Microphone icon will make her stop (so you can do the setup in peace and quiet). Another variable, would be the disc you use. Normally, you would be getting 15063 from the official download link. But since the Heidoc URL generator can get you a sample of all four versions, you could walk it back. I expect the Accessibility licensing thing is managed on the server end. Paul |

In cases like this you can boot to a safe mode. How is this going to help him if he knows nothing about computers? The OS I'm typing this in, still isn't "fixed". And I've been working on an intermittent problem with it for more than a year. 1) Glimmer of hope when RAM tested bad. But problem re-appeared a number of days after the new RAM was installed. RAM still tests good. 2) Yes, the OS has been reinstalled already. The worst case symptom, is my OS would crash, after reading around 15GB of data from the hard drive. Making operation a bit like spinning a roulette wheel. Today, I can read more data than that, without a problem. But I don't really think my symptoms have gone away. It'll come back. It always comes back. It's just a matter of time. Paul |
