All drives have 2 years limited warranty so return it and get a
replacement drive.Β* Laws are made for people like you to use them to get
protection!!!!!!!!!.

There is a rule that says that products have to be fit for purpose and
so even outside the two years you might get a replacement if you put
your case properly and in the correct form!!.

If the retailer is no longer trading:

* Go straight to the credit card provider – either call them and say
you would like to make a claim under Section 75 (they will usually
send you a form to fill in) or log in to your internet banking
locate the transaction in your account history and look for an
option to β€œquery this transaction” or similar.
* If the retailer has entered administration after you have paid for
goods but before their arrival, you can still make a claim, based
on an anticipated failure of the company to deliver.
* If you are making a claim because of a fault, the credit card
company might ask you to arrange an independent report to verify
the fault. If the fault is confirmed, it should refund you the
cost of this as well.

I have a Seagate 4TB external HD, powered, like this;

It works fine with Win7. No sign of trouble.
But when I plug it into Win10 the system dies. Strangely, when I boot
with it plugged in, everything goes fine.

There's nothing relative in the Windows Log, other than info that the
system didn't shut down properly before the reboot.

Has anybody seen this? Or, any hunches as to what's causing it?

Ed

Curiouser still.

I got my new HD, copied the files from the old one to it, and the old
one is now surplus to requirements.
But, something I was thinking about made me give it one last go; this
time in a rear USB socket. And it worked; so I then tried it in a USB2
back socket, and it worked there too. It had failed in all four front
ones. There are about ten around the back.
Does this square with anybody's theory?

Well now, I'm hooked too. I have to go further. I won't bin it yet, but
I also can't look at it just yet; not for some time.
I don't want to let down those of you who've given it time.
So then, I give my word. I'll be back on it later this summer, or maybe
if the weather turns, England get knocked out of the World Cup, or Andy
Murray out of Wimbledon.

Ed

So I take it you're traveling to a country that has beer ?

I've been reading reports about your neck of the woods.

1) Rail lines buckling. (This is normal.)
2) Road surface melting. (This is normal.)
3) The pitch on some exotic roof started to melt and run.

And these are all controllable things... when the
temperature stays where you expect it to stay.
It's when the temp is outside the expected range,
that all sorts of material science "fine tuning"
is off.

Different parts of the country, use a different
asphalt blend.

We're getting a hot spell in a few days, and I get
the impression the ******* is going to "stall overhead".
Not good. Our road won't melt... but I might.
And yes, we have beer. (But not beer as you know it.)
We can even get Belgian beer here.

You didn't say if the new drive works in the front USB. If it does,
then it sounds like there is something not quite normal about the old
drive AND there is something not quite normal about the front USB
controller (as someone else mentioned). Using both together causes
your symptoms. I look forward to hearing your final report.

I've given up on the thing. It's going in the bin. I can't feel safe
with a problem like that looming in the background. I'll probably buy
a Seagate portable 4TB to replace it.

I presume you are joking but if not please let me buy it off you.
I don't have a need for it other than to see if I get the same problem
but more to stop it going to waste.

Come and pick it up for free.

where?

Tell me where you are, and I'll tell you how far away I am.

That's extremely kind of you.
I'm probably too far away in Oxford but I would gladly pay for the drive, or
pay postage & donate a sum to a local charity if you won't accept anything
for it, if you change your mind.

This heatwave has stalled over us. Thank the powers that be! The jet
stream has moved north;
https://goo.gl/gxp9fk
and is going to stay there for some time. Yippeee!

Don't believe all you read in the press. We have lots of beer; and my
tipple too; a red wine. Add that to a meal out at my local restaurant
and carvery, with the sun and the laid-back lifestyle, and that'll do me
for a while.

How does a cash payment figure in your concern for me?

Let's you and I explore the higher realms of human thought.
The empyrean limits are my homeland too.
What do you want? Kant's Critique of Pure Reason? Plato's Republic?
David Hume's Treatise of Human Nature?
I'd find it interesting to go back to them. I used to love them. My MA
treatise was "Pragmatism and William James" but I never found James half
as much an intellectual giant as the former three I've mentioned.

There are some sharp people in this group. And although they might not
be at home with the highly abstruse language of philosophers (with its
host of technical shorthand (which, of course, most specialised
disciplines have these days)), yet they grasp intuitively the central
problems of philosophy.

If we start a thread and promise Marquis of Queensberry rules; no
one-upmanship, no piling technical terms to bury your opponent, as
little ego as we can, no ad hominem arguments. The purpose being to get
others joining in, and demonstrate how the layman grasps the essentials.

I'll start some very central subject, if you like, maybe one of what
Kant called "the antinomies of reason", and we'll bring it forward in
time, see how modern philosophy and science unpack it.
