Default How to clean up any or all of the "installed apps and core features for Windows 10"

How to clean up any or all of the "installed apps and core features for
Windows 10"

I was cleaning up a new Windows installation of Microsoft garbage when I
decided to document in my log files specifically what could easily be
deleted, and what impact that deletion had on the system (which will take
about a week to assess).

I figured I'd leverage this information to others to benefit from.
Here is my current log file, after deletion but before impact assessment.
================================================== ==========================
1. After installing Windows 10, list the installed apps & core features:
a. RMB-Start Windows PowerShell (Admin)
b. cd c:\tmp (use whatever directory you desire)
c. get-appxpackage "$(get-date -f yyyyMMdd)ms_apps.txt"
or for a less-detailed list
c. get-appxpackage | findstr PackageFullName "$(get-date -f yyyyMMdd)ms_apps.txt"
d. exit

Note: RMB === right mouse button
Note: Use any filespec you like for the output file.
================================================== ==========================
2. Remove up to 21 (of 41) apps that Win10 "Apps & features" will allow:

a. Start Settings Apps Apps & features Uninstall
b. Those with the x in the checkbox can be uninstalled using this GUI.
[_]Alarms & Clock, Microsoft Corporation

================================================== ==========================
3. Remove the remaining 23 of 24 apps that Ccleaner will allow:
a. Start menu cleaner ccleaner (use whatever menu you have)
b. With CCleaner, you can remove all but one of the remaining MS apps:
[x]Alarms & Clock, Microsoft Corporation
[x]Calculator, Microsoft Corporation
[x]Camera, Microsoft Corporation
[x]Feedback Hub, Microsoft Corporation (it shows up as "Get Help")

Note: Items in curly braces show up in CCleaner but not in Settings.
================================================== ==========================
4. If desired, remove Microsoft Edge
a. RMB-Start Windows PowerShell (Admin)
b. get-appxpackage | findstr PackageFullName | select-string Edge_
c. That reports:
Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_42.17134.1.0_neutral__8wek yb3d8bbwe
d. get-appxpackage Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_42.17134.1.0_neutral__8wek yb3d8bbwe | remove-appxpackage

Note: Remove-AppPackage no longer works in the newer Win10 versions.
The best way I know using only native Windows tools is this:
a. Log in as administrator
b. Delete the files MicrosoftEdge.exe & MicrosoftEdgeCP.exe in the dir
C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wek yb3d8bbwe
c. Set the directory to read-only so Microsoft won't overwrite it.

Note: This didn't work in my first test. Need to test further as there
are plenty of other methods which should work just fine.

There, cleaned that longwinded claptrap for ya.
Posted using vim, in an OS where vim would be used

Some people don't like details. Details confuse them.
Those people enjoy shallow thinking.

That's fine.
Most people are shallow thinkers.

Others delve deeply.
Where value is added, by testing.

The shallow thinkers can only comprehend the tip of the iceberg.
The deeper thinkers strive to always add value to the knowledge level.

Hence, you might *add value* by increasing our knowledge of the understanding
of the significance that of the 100 Microsoft core apps, removing the first
50 hasn't yet (in a dozen hours so far), caused significant negative impact.

Delving probably far deeper into details than most can comprehend, we must
note there are still 50 more MS core apps to be removed for testing.

Those few cognoscenti here ... can you help advise how to remove the
latter 50 Microsoft core apps from Windows 10?

Here is how to find the remaining 50 of 100 MS core apps:

PowershellAsAdmin Get-AppxPackage | findstr InstallLocation app.txt

That reveals 50 more MS core apps that need to be considered for removal.

On Fri, 29 Jun 2018 17:28:14 -0400, Wolf K wrote:

I wouldn't. Some of them aren't apps, "core" or otherwise, but necessary
elements of the OS. The others are entangled with the OS, a trick MS
uses so that you can't get rid of them without damaging one or more
functionalities of the OS. That's why they aren't on the list of "core
apps" MS will let you remove and/or CCleaner can remove.

I completely understand what you're saying Wolf K, so it's nice you said
it. You know that we all know that already, but it's nice you bothered to
tell us.

You avoid all that hassle by not using Windows.

No. That's "giving up".
Dumb****s "just give up".

Those who can't handle detail, "just give up".
Me?
I never give up.

Why do you think I brick my system so often?
Every time Paul suggest something dangerous, I do it - and brick it!
(Just kidding Paul - if you're out there.)

If you want to "just give up", you buy iOS (that's for nospam to ponder).

You have to keep in mind what my strategic goal is.
Remember the first 60 things that you do after installing Windows 10?

Well, number 500 is this file:
500_uninstall_microsoft_crapware.txt

It's *easy* to NOT do step 50.
But the technorati of us *learn* how to run that step 50.

What we end up with is a *better Windows experience*.
Just like wresting the menus gives us a *better Windows experience*.

But you knew that already, so why am I bothering to tell you? Just my
last remaining "shred of decency" I guess.

I always knew, Wolf K, that you do have a shred of decency.
It's rare for anyone to teach me anything that isn't the QUESTION in the
thread though.

For example, Char Jackson constantly trys to prove to me that he knows
something, but it's ALWAYS not the answer to the question in the thread.

It's like Mayayana telling me a BMP is better than a JPG, even if the
question is how to 'spell JPG".

Char Jackson, to a thread on vi, tells me that NOTEPAD++ is an editor.
Shocker of all shockers. Golly gee whiz. That Char Jackson is a genius.
Yup. He sure 'are' a genius.

My point is that you're not gonna teach me much, unless.... and there's
that unless.

If I bother to *ask* a question, then you can sure as hell *teach me*
something if you *know* the answer to the quesetion.

But almost nobody ever knows teh answers to my questions.
They can only tell me that Notepad++ is a text editor.
Or that BMP files are better than JPG files.
Or, l8ike Frank Slootweg tried, that some headers can't be obfuscated.

The point is simple.
I know a lot. A lot more than almost all of you know.
But still, I know nothing. I'm just average.

So guys like Paul know a **** load more than I do.
But most of you only know what I knew twenty five year ago.

The simple fact is that a thread I bother to write asks a tough question,
and telling me that NotePad++ is an editor isn't gonna help anyone but a
pure noob.

In this thread, the question is simple:
How do we get rid of that second 50 of the Microsoft stuff
(some of which is critical but much of which is not)

I wouldn't ask the question if the answer was known to most of you.
Because I know more than most of you - but - some of you know more than I.

I'm hoping that those rare people who know more than I do,
can answer the question.

HINT: It's not gonna be any of the trolls because none of them are smart.

Most people are stupid, so of course they don't care to "own" their own
system.

You have to realize my strategic goal in this thread is step 50 of the
current 60 steps to setting up an *efficient better Windows experience!*.
500_uninstall_microsoft_crapware.txt

There are at least 100 easily identified "core" Microsoft "things" to
consider uninstalling and testing what the ramifications are.

I've uninstalled all but one of the first set of about 50 (Edge being the
last one to figure out how best to uninstall - but that's mostly academic
'cuz I use Edge as one of my browsers - it sucks - but I only use any one
browser for only one web site so it has its purpose).

Or, don't care if a few apps they don't use reside on their device.

You're completely whooshing on the strategy which is to create a
*better Windows experience*

That's why step 50 exists as one of 60 (so far) tactics to implement the
strategy:
*500_uninstall_microsoft_crapware.txt*

Where time wasting is a way of life.

It's hard for me to not tell you how utterly stupid you sound.
You feel that a *better Windows experience* is a waste of time?

Really?
You're _that_ stupid?

OK. So you _are_ that stupid.
The waster of time here, is you.

a. You do NOT know the answer to the question
b. So all you _can_ do, is waste everyone's time.

Why do you bother responding to a question that is so far over your head
that you can't even *comprehend* the question?

The question is simple:
Q: How do we delete the second 50 of the 100 Microsoft core apps?

HINT: If you don't know the answer to *that* question, you're wasting our
time by responding Contrary to Mayayana's racist thoughts,
the *fewer* answers to a thread, the more focused it is on the solution!

Answered in another post.

For example, Char Jackson constantly trys to prove to me that he knows

At least you're learning new things. I'm glad you see the value in that.

Char Jackson, to a thread on vi, tells me that NOTEPAD++ is an editor.

Troll much?

Actually, he didn't say anything of the sort. The first time you made
that silly claim, I gently corrected you. The fact that you just made
that silly claim again tells me that you're intentionally being
dishonest.

The point is simple.
I know a lot. A lot more than almost all of you know.

I'd love to see the first shred of evidence to back up that claim.
(Never mind, I know it's just your AS talking. You weren't serious.)

Finally, something we can agree on.

As always, you didn't deliver, dodged, diverted, misrepresented, lied,
etc., but NEVER did you PROVE that you could 'obfuscate' ALL headers of
your posts, for the simple reason that you CANNOT.

Default How to clean up any or all of the "installed apps and core features for Windows 10"

The point is simple.
I know a lot. A lot more than almost all of you know.

lol
Delusions of grandeur.
Probably the same psychopath that does the Diesel spam posts...
