Hyperlinks in Outlook
Whenever I try to open a link in an email I get the message: "This
operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on theis computer. Please contact the system administrator" I am running Windows 10 and Chrome. I believe this started wehn I tried MS Edge. I have Chrome as my default borwser. I have tried the tips of editing regisry to have "htmlfile" on appropriate lines. Anything else? |

The Subject of your post says "Hyperlinks in Outlook", but the body of your post says nothing about Outlook. If it's really Outlook where you'd like to enable hyperlinks, then a quick Google search for "enable hyperlinks in outlook" will turn up step by step directions. Google search string https://www.google.com/search?q=enab...nks+in+outlook Random search result, this one applicable to Outlook 2013 https://smallbusiness.chron.com/change-outlook-security-settings-allow-clickable-links-79331.html |

: https://www.google.com/search?q=enab...nks+in+outlook No - it is links in existing emails that I have received, that have embedded hyperlinks. And I have just checked - the same thing happend with links in a Word or pdf. So I conclude that my PC is not allowing a hyperlink to open Chrome and the relevant webpage. |

Does it point at a web site, a file server, or specify a filename? If a filename, what is its extension? E-mail clients have long blocked downloads of executable files. For a hyperlink in Outlook where you get the security block, show the target of that hyperlink (show the URL string). When you hover the cursor over the hyperlink, Outlook shows the URL string. I suspect you can also right-click on the hyperlink to copy it, and show it here. A ... href="urlstring" ...comment/A This is to ^ ^ This what you see rendered where the --------' '--- in the display of the e-mail hyperlink points The above is when the sender composes in HTML format and adds a hyperlink to their message. However, most e-mail clients will also automatically make clickable any strings that look like URLs. Please visit www.intel.com to get specs on their CPUs. \___________/ ^ Not a hyperlink. You might try visiting the Default Apps applet in Win10 and changing your default web browser to something else temporarily. For example, change it to Edge and retest. You can always go back and change it to Chrome again, if you like. Do Outlook and Word tell you that the links are active? They usually do so by popping up a tool tip reminding you that can open the underlying link by Ctrl-clicking on it. |

When you hold your mouse over the hotlink, the URI should show. uri-name://somedomain.com/somefile.ext The handler should have the same name as the uri-name. Paul |

Paul I am having to "Copy" the hyperlink after right clicking it - and paste it into the address bar of the Browser. There are several fixes on YouTube involving a Regedit. The reg lines coply - but it is not working. |

I don't know if it's different on Windows 10, but if I do this on Windows 8.1, the browsers seem to grab much, much more than just the HTTP and HTTPS protocols. For example when making Chrome the default browser, it grabs all kinds of *other* (than .htm, .html and .shtml) extensions, such as .pdf and *other* (than HTTP and HTTPS) protocols, for example MAILTO, NEWS, NNTP, SMS, etc., etc.. So when I switched my browser to Chrome, I had to undo all of the non-web stuff and re-associate them with the right program, i.e. Adobe for .pdf, Thunderbird for MAILTO, etc.. So in future, I don't use 'Set this program as default', but 'Choose defaults for this program' and only select those extensions and protocols which I actually want to set and leave the others as they are. N.B. The (8.1) 'Set Default Programs' Control Panel applet happily accepts 'Set this program as default' - and hence clobbers your settings - without clicking the 'OK' button, while 'Choose defaults for this program' *does* require clicking 'Save' in the exact same position as the 'OK' button! :-( And no, there's no 'Undo'! :-( |
