I've got an AMD A8-3870K, no problems here and if there were, I made a
backup image of my Windows partition, just in case.

That's a pretty sloppy use of the word "bricked" ...

While I don't use an AMD laptop (since they're not adequate for gaming
yet), I have to point out that I'm a big fan of their APU and that if
you don't want to spend more than $1k on a portable, you can't go
wrong with an A8 or an A10.

Seems to be limited to Athlon CPUs which, shockingly, are still being
used.

Kudos to anyone who still runs an Athlon or Athlon XP-based machine.

BTW, are you sure that 4056892 is the CPU patch? I think it's just a
cumulative update for Win 10 build 1709.

Let's break it down.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/...date-kb4056892

Security updates to Windows SMB Server === Wannacrypt (SMB)
the Windows Subsystem for Linux, === Meltdown (via LXSS and how it connects to OS?)
Windows Kernel, === Meltdown plus regular monthly kernel exploit (other)
Windows Datacenter Networking, === SMB???
Windows Graphics, === regular monthly GDI exploit
(keeps company with regular kernel patch)
Microsoft Edge, === Spectre (JIT Javascript?)
Internet Explorer, === Spectre (JIT Javascript?)
and the Microsoft Scripting Engine. === Spectre (JIT Javascript?)

Purely a guess (because Microsoft won't explain it),

Don't shoot the messenger!!
I just posted that link for info purposes.

For those AMD cpu users that didn't read the article, one quote was:
"Users report Athlon-powered machines in perfect working order before the
patch just don’t work after it."

The AMD issue is valid, yet not all AMD chipsets and mobo combinations
appear to be impacted. The problem has also appeared with the January CPU
patch for AMD chipsets on Windows Insider builds and reported via the
Windows Insiders Feedback app.

I wonder _which_ Athlons they're referring to. There's Athlon, Athlon
XP and apparently some newer form I never got to use. I can't imagine
that all of them are affected.
