I just posted that link for info purposes.

For those AMD cpu users that didn't read the article, one quote was:
"Users report Athlon-powered machines in perfect working order before the
patch just don't work after it."

I wonder _which_ Athlons they're referring to. There's Athlon, Athlon
XP and apparently some newer form I never got to use. I can't imagine
that ll of them are affected.

I've got freezes after installing KB4056898 on Win8.1 and AMD A4-4400M CPU.

The computer started to freeze on watching any videos in Internet and
sometimes
when just browsing. The fan works well.

I uninstalled the update and the freezes stopped.

BTW, are you sure that 4056892 is the CPU patch? I think it's just a
cumulative update for Win 10 build 1709.

Let's break it down.

I believe the AMD CPU patch should be KB 405689*4*!

AMD never should have gotten that update to begin with. The very fact
that Microsot forced it on everyone with promises of slower
performance and worse stability is probably the best reason to abandon
the operating system.

Microsoft’s fix for the Meltdown and Spectre bugs may be crocking
AMD-powered PCs.

If you have an AMD cpu, it could be worth reading.

FX-8300 here, no problems with installing the patch.

A10-5800K Installed just fine. Microsoft's Powershell checker tells me I
need to upgrade my Bios, but that is a different matter, and since my
motherboard is like five years old, I doubt that will happen.

I already installed KB4056892 patch, and after I ran the Powershell
checker, it stated that it doesn't allow those types of scripts to run
anymore. So maybe that means the patch is working?

There are also more modern Athlon implementations, that are based on
Excavator architecture, so those should be working fine too. I think
these are for the really old Athlons.

It's a cumulative update, so it's not just about the two malware
patches. It's possible that on an AMD machine, all it does is bypass the
extra code and go back to the original code path, since AMD isn't
affected by Meltdown problem. Sceptre is a different issue, which
affects every modern processor no matter what brand or architecture.

I'm curious as to whether there is an application like Driver Reviver
but for motherboard BIOSes. Most people have no idea how to update
their BIOS and I imagine that someone, somewhere, thought of
facilitating the process.

The patch broke my A6-4400M. Not unbooptable, but freezes on internet
surfing and video playback.

Asus has a neat process that works very well. They have also set up one USB
port on the I/O panel to be the Bios update port for a thumb drive, and
there is a button on the motherboard to initiate the update. Of course, we
all know someone who should NEVER be allowed close to an opened case!

Just to go along with all this discussion, I looked at my update history
and according to that I have installed KB4056892 on 1/7, 1/8, and 1/9.
Since it requires a reboot and all the associated messages and such, I know
that that only happened on 1/9.

And yes, there were several other updates hidden in there as well. Someone
on one of the blogs posted that along with KB4056892 there were a coupole
of SMB patches and a couple of others, I don't remember what.

As far as I'm concerned, it's terribly dangerous to download a BIOS
update from anywhere other than the manufacturer. To do otherwise is
playing with fire.

That sounds like some other problem other than the two malware patches.
Perhaps one of the other subpatches within the cumulative?
