How can I stop Microsoft downloading fixes, updates, etc? Short of
disconnecting it from the Internet, that is.

Take a look at https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

It doesn't work.

rename wuaueng.dll wuaueng.dll.bak

*******

To avoid permission issued, I did the rename in Linux Mint (LiveCD boot).

Then boot Windows 10 and watch the fun.

Task Manager shows Windows Defender doing the usual scanning,
but no sign of TiWorker or SVCHOST wuauserv.

Is it an ideal situation ? No. But it did put a stop
to it.

To update Windows Defender, there is a separate Microsoft
download page with 100MB Defender updates, updated daily.

I hope Microsoft isn't angry with me.
