Default PC Failing boot-up after installing service pack 1 for WinXP

I've tried this twice now. After the first try, I re-
installed windows Xp thinking I had file compatability
issues. Now, it has happened again. My pc fails to load
Windows Xp. When I try to boot up in safe mode, it stops
at the file WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys. I renamed
the file to Mup.sav and it still fails at the same point.
Any pointers oin troubleshooting this ?
