Default critical update 814033

I had previously installed the 814033 critical update
successfully. At a later date I used system restore. The
Windows Update now sometimes (50/50) reports that I need to
install this update. It now always fails.
I have looked to see if there is any uninstall or means to
remove all traces of the previous install, can't find
anything.
I have downloaded the update from Windows Catalog and tried
to run it directly, It fails and says that the inf file
cannot be validated, be sure cryptographic service are
running (they are).

Any suggestions or help appreciated.

All other updates install just fine, including the VM update
just released.

TIA
follow-ups will go to automatically to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

Renaming or deleting the Catroot2 folder may solve the problem.

Go to http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;326815

Follow the steps 6 to 8 in the Resolution section of above link (do a reboot
first so the computer is "fresh"). Then try to install the update again.

The link above is for SP1, but the Catroot2 problem is now also surfacing in
recommended/critical updates and not only for the SP1 upgrade.

Thank you very much, I'll keep it in mind.

Renaming CATROOT2 solved the problem last night.
