I have been trying to locate a file (normal.dot) with the windows XP find
files option and it will not show up even though I know it is there since

I
can find it by other means.
This file is neither a system file nor hidden.
If I search the entire hard disk it will not show up at all, however if I
search from two or three folders above in the tree it does show up.
It kind of defeats the purpose if you have to know where a file is if you
want to find it dont you think?

Very annoying and utterly stupid in my book.
Maybe I will wipe XP and install 98.
Any input welcome

Regards to all.

Yes you are most definitely correct.
Thank you very much for your invaluable help

The problem is the Application Data folder, which is up several layers in
the tree where normal.dot lives, is a hidden folder. The search in XP by
default does not look in hidden files/folders. When doing the search make
sure to select "more advanced options." There check "search hidden files
and folders." You may also want to go ahead and check "search system
folders."
