Default Multiple shutdown attempts

I have two XP machines on my home network and after
several months of adding hardware & software, I have
found that seldom can I shut down the PCs on the
first attempt. After a second attempt, the "turn off"
button works...What''s the deal?

Most likely a driver is not unloading properly upon exit which xp is
interpreting as a crash and is rebooting.

I had Quicken 2000 loading a driver (mrtrate.sys) that caused the same
problem. After finally troubleshooting it and removing the driver, xp
shut down properly.

Try booting to safe mode and see if it shuts down properly. If so, it's
a driver.
