Default Can't Stop installation problem PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Hi,
When trying to reinstall windows xp i got the message ;

Installation failed D:\1386\asms Error Message:The system could not
find the file specified

It then exits and restarts the computer and imidiatly trys to
reinstall windows xp without giving you a option to abort it. When you
try to start in safe mode , it says 'windows setup cannot work in safe
mode and takes you through to the windows installation setup and the
same error message ....... and so the circle continues!!!!!

I heard this could be due to having a corrupt disk, so i borrowed a
shiney new one from a friend. Now the error message just reads;

One of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not
be installed.

leaving you only with the option of pressing ok, and the system
restarting and the painful loop also.

How do i stop it from trying to reinstall windows and get control of
my pc again?

i am using a friends pc to write this..... any help would be greatly
apprciated.
