Default Xp Home Edition - ipc$ password requested on logging in from win98 - though with users in both m

XP and XP Home networking has been "simplified" to the
extent that it can be very annoying to try to make it work
properly. There are some articles in the KB enabling
file sharing under Window XP; however, what it often boils
down to is this:

Ensure the exact same user exists on both machines with
the same password.

Check through your Group Policy security objects to ensure
that there are no enabled options like: Disable Access to
this PC from the Network.

The MS Knowledge base articles (cann't recall the numbers)
are actually rather good.

No email please.

i am having a strange problem. i have a win98 on one and

winXP Home
edition on another machine which is conneted directly

through network
cards. i can ping both systems. i shared the folders on

win98, on
winXP and i can access the network well. But after

restarting the XP
machine, when i try to access the XP machine from the

win98 machine it
is asking for network password to connect to \\"XP

machine
name"\\IPC$. When i check the xp machine folder the

sharing sign(hand
carrying folder) seems to be there but when i take

then "Sharing and
Security" from a shared folders properties menu.

The "Network Sharing
and Seurity" column in Sharing tab sharing tab is

saying "As a
security measure, windows has disabled remote access to

this computer.
However you can access remote access and safely share

files by running
the network setup wizard" follwed by two links

saying "Network Setup
Wizard" and "If you understand the security risks but

want to share
files without running the wizard click here". And if i

click the 2nd
link and enable "Just enable file sharing" and then ok.

Then i can
access the xp machine from win98 without getting the

password prompt
window and can access files. and you dont need

enable "Just enable
file sharing" for every other folder if one is done so

all the others
can be accessed irelevant of which one you enabled the

option "Just
enable file sharing".
please help me out because i am fed up with enbale "Just

enable file
sharing" every time after reboot. And tried almost every

possibilities
except reinstalling XP once more. Or please tell me

whether its a
feature of windows xp home edition..

Does this happen when you log on with administrator
