Default Want to play VCD od DVD on home DVD player not PC

I've been looking online for a basic intro and overwhelmed with details.
What I'm trying to do:
I have jpg, avi's from my digital camera that I'd like to send to family to
watch on a store-bought DVD player.
I've been wasting a few days trying to make this happen with moviemaker
and Nero.

I've created +R, - R , VCDs - ok on PC and then I bring into my living
room - insert the CD/DVD and get an error. It won't load. I have Nero 7
and thought it had ability to do this - when I choose Make DVD and browse,
it's looking for vob files ( isn't that DVD stuff already?), so I tried
Data - DVD - browse - still avi, wmv is not "good". Nero Express - same
thing.

I have jpg, avi, wmv files only

Can someone tell me WHAT app to use /buy/download so that I can: take my
camera jpg pictures and avi files - from a folder on my PC - and burn them
to a VCD or DVD that will work in any DVD player to view on a TV ( not PC)

I thought this would be pretty simple .. digital pictures / digital
CD/DVD - copy - create - done. Ha!
I.m not trying to be fancy. I don't want to be Steven Spielberg, I just
want to have my files viewable on a DVD player.

Thanks very much for pointers.

I think the problem isn't your disk or Nero. It is the machine you are
trying to play them on. I was really frustrated trying to do the same thing.
My sister sent me a disk of jpgs that she burned and could see on her DVD
player on her TV. I could not see them on my DVD player. My DVD player was
only a year older than hers. Later in the year we purchased a new DVD player
for another TV in the house and it played the disk just fine.

Bobb,
First a warning.
Not all dvd players will play vcd's, so you cannot have a 100% guarantee of
it working, even if you could do it
Not all dvd players will play a dvd you make.........

But maybe 99% will

Nero have some good tutorials for there app here
http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/Tutorials.html
But they do do several versions and only the full version will make dvds and
possibly vcd's.

I don't have nero installed so I can't be precise, but there should be two
options for making the dvd, one as you've found will write dvd folders
already made, the other will create a dvd. This will take dv.avi files and
create the mpegs and vobs that you need. If you don't have this option then
you most likely haven't got the full version.

I would plump for making a dvd over a vcd or even svcd as dvd quality and
compatibility is far better.

Now, you can either buy the full version of nero, or opt for another app to
do this. There are many.
Ulead do Movie factory, which is great for making dvds, they also do
videostudio, which will import/edit adn create a dvd all in one. Free
trials are available.
Adobe do premiere elements 3, which will imoprt/edit and create dvds, also
very good a free trial is also available.

The list could go on, but these offer perhaps best value for your money.
They will also most likely work with your camera's files, whereas MM may
not.

If you have Nero 7, to make a DVD of your photos (JPG's) I believe that
what you want to use is the function "Make Photo Slideshow (DVD)". You
don't want to make a data DVD if you want it to work on DVD players.
This is what I have read--I don't use Nero myself.

RA, new dvd players will play jpeg slideshows, so you don't have to author a
dvd, but for compatibility you are best off making a proper dvd.

Kenneth,
I'm not sure if this is the right option, because I thik it makes a jpeg
slideshow on a dvd, and this is not very compatible with dvd players, you
need to author a dvd.

Try Doom9 forums. There are plenty of DVD authoring tutorials out there.

Generally speaking you want to create a DVD Video disk. These are different
in format from a DVD data disc, and the videos need to be in mpeg2 format
which is what DVD video authoring tools do.

Some versions of Nero have a tool to do this. Not to be confused with the
Nero tool that takes files already converted to mpeg2 and puts them on a
DVD. Your files will need to be re-encoded.

JPGs should be fine on a normal data CD. I expect by now most players are
JPG compatible.

When you create a DVD video disk, it should be set as DVD-ROM and don't use
RW, (except for testing if you can), when burnt for maximum compatibility.
There are however some machines that don't like certain brands of disks for
some unknown reason, so that will be a suck it and see approach.

That's how it seems, but : the DVD ( HP and Sony) burners in my PC have
the little logos stating that THEY meet the standards, so ( he asked
rhetorically) if there is a STANDARD for VCD's and DVD's , how can a
company make a DVD player that cannot play "standard" DVD's ? It is NOT
like I'm trying to watch a PAL tape on a VHS deck. The manufacturers set
the standards - not us. Even when I tried the HIGHMAT ( old ) VCD
standard, it failed on 2 of my DVD players. Trying burn again - now with
NeroVision4.

Not all standalone video DVD/CD players recognise picture CDs.

But the situation with picture DVDs is worse. This is one of those
ambiguities. The DVD was not intended to hold picture files for playing in
a standalone DVD player. However, the spec was somewhat ambiguous on the
point and as a result, there are players that will recognise and play such
disks.

Your best bet is to use a DVD video editing package that will accept image
files. I believe Windows' own Movie Maker does do this, but I am unable to
check as this machine doesn't have it.

Sonic produces an application that does precisely what you want, and it is
provided with many of the top line DVD/CD burning packages. It is called
MyDVD, but beware that Sonic also produced a far older but identically named
application that had a very different purpose.

Default Want to play VCD/ DVD on home DVD player not PC

John,

Even when I try on my PC it doesn't 'work right'. If I could ask a few
questions about VCD's ... ( VCD 101)

1 Shouldn't there be an AUTOPLAY function/option?
If I drag the AVSEQ01.DAT file to WMP then it plays OK, but just
inserting into CD player does nothing. I just burned another one - same
thing. I see only the 4 folders at root level. In NeroVision4 I see no
option for autoplay. right-click on drive with burned VCD inserted- no
option for autoplay, so I suspect that's why it 'won't load' - normally a
GOOD VCD/DVD loads to some menu, right ?

2. Assuming it DID work OK, how does it load - to get to ' The Menu I
made' ? Is that a pointer inside one of those folders ? Or should be a
root level ?

3. A big picture question :
If I bring film to CVS and tell them to put it on a VCD for me, that has
never failed to work when I/family/neighbors get it home. Put it in - it
plays - on a pc, dvd player - never had an issue. What do THEY do to that
media - anyone know ?

Thanks again.

Yeah - using Nero Vision4 to burn,
DVD now plays in living room DVD player !

Burned to VCD too but VCD still won't load there though.
More research needed here.
Off to read those links.
Thanks guys
