OK - yup... still running XP and Outlook Express.
SO - getting forced to migrate to Win7,
and will probably go with WLM for email,
but what is suggested for reading Newsgroups - like this one ???

Try Pan: http://pan.rebelbase.com/download/

Pan is still in Beta

LOL don't be silly.

0.139 might be, but 0.135 and a dozen or so earlier versions are fine for
XP.

I run Linux here as my main OS and though I do have Pan installed rarely
use it. I much prefer Thunderbird.

Pan's own website says it's Beta

Are the steps to Import email from Outlook Express
separate from the tasks to Import newsgroups from Outlook Express ?

Are there instructions for :
A - migrating from OE to TB on the same PC ?
B - migrating from OE to TB on a DIFFERENT PC.. like a hardware move ?

Pan has always been "Beta." That's no reason to not use it, as it is a
rather good newsreader.

Take a look at Agent if you don't mind a commercial product.

http://www.forteinc.com/agent/index.php

It does email and NGs. I've been using it for many years.

Web based forums are like subscribing to 10 different newspapers
and having to visit 10 different news stands to pickup each one.
Email list-server groups and USENET are like having all of those
newspapers delivered to your door every morning.

And that is one thing I like very much actually !! With TB its very
easy!! You just set TB to point where all your data is (emails,
contacts, newsgoup settings etc....even blug ins). Lets say you have
your data-folder in "important" folder. Then you install a new TB..
..then in its ini-file you just set it to point to that folder... launch
TB and voila... everything works perfectly !! Very nice when having
multiple partitions and running many Windowses... just intall TB to eatc
of them and put data to one folder and set all TB s to point to that...
then everything is in sync.

Nice that every data is in one folder.. easy to make backup etc.

Why not thunderbird? I use it and like it. It has a good newsgroup
access as well.

IMHO, the main reason Thunderbird sucks as a mail reader is due to it's
inability to deal with multipart yenc binaries. If you jump through hoops you
can make it happen, but why bother? If you never visit a newsgroup where
pictures or other kinds of binaries are posted (you are missing out on a lot of
interesting stuff), then use Thunderbird. The folks at Mozilla treat
Thunderbird's NNTP functionality as a ******* child and seem to have chosen to
ignore it as much as possible. However, it is a great mail reader, I use it as
such myself.

ok... but I do not need binary access... so for me its fine. I do not
see me needing that. I can download binaries using other sites, only
text in newsgoups for me.. but ye true, if somebody needs that then its
different.

If I were going to cheap out and insist on a no cost solution, I would download
and use FreeAgent 3.3 from Forte for Usenet and Thunderbird as a mail client.

I used WLM and SeaMonkey.

Quite a few folks will complain about WLM lack of quoting properly
impacting threading.

WLM's design intent (and has been since version 2011 was released) is
for use with a Microsoft account and Hotmail type email accounts using
the http/DeltaSync protocol (Hotmail type accounts are
Hotmail/Live/MSN/Outlook.com are all are automatically Microsoft accounts).

Additionally use of a Microsoft Account signon in WLM to Microsoft
services provides integration across other Windows Essential products
(Photo Gallery - Movie Maker and synchronization or use with online
services such as OneDrive, Contacts, and Calendar)

You can obtain all versions of WLM (2009, 2011, 2012) via the following
links (which are direct downloads to the software on Microsoft's servers)

On the other hand if you prefer SeaMonkey it (Browser and Mail/News
Client) can be downloaded he

Forte Free agent was still there if you dig on their site.

I use it occasionally on one machine and Pan regularly on several.

I dislike Thunderbird, but sometimes use it for email.

The best news and mail client by far was Turnpike. A tragedy that
development stopped and it's now obsolete, but it is still working well
here on 32-bit installations.

I went through the same thing a couple of years ago but with Win8.
Wikipedia has a very thorough list and compaison of email/news clients.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari..._email_clients

I tried many of them. The one that I liked best is Claws...it is very
similar to OE but will not write HTML; it will read it with a plugin.

The lack of composig in HTML was a deal breaker for me so I stuck with OE,
running it in XP in a virtual box (Oracle) on Win8.

I've been using Forte's "Agent" for some years... does both email and
NG's to my satisfaction.

Dabbled in Thunderbird when setting somebody else up, and was unable to
see any reason not to use it for my relatively modest requirements.

Maybe somebody with more experience can comment on T-Bird.

I've used Thunderbird since I bought this Mac almost 6 years ago.

If you use HTML email, and many do these days, I'd recommend against TB.
Too many problems with the HTML editor. I've got a list of @15
problems with TB's HTML editor if you are interested.

With this last release, TB no longer checks email for one of my accounts
when TB starts, and appears to have trouble with that account even after
TB has been running. So I have to manually check the account. It also
appears TB is once again reporting new email has arrived even when it
hasn't. Spam filter is off.

They did finally fix the EXIF bug, though.

If I ever get the desire to get it set up, I'm going back to Outlook.
It's installed, and I use it as a cross check for other email issues at
the moment.

A question, ...winston,

But does design intent prevent MS from having proper quoting?
