I installed Thunderbird today and found it useless. I can get mail

Then you're doing something wrong. I can verify that Thunderbird works
with Gmail. I've had as many as 6 mail accounts set up.

I have four, though Gmail is not among them,(*) and Thunderbird does
a terrific job. I tried using Thunderbird for newsgroups some time
ago, though, and gave up; I can't remember what the deal-breaker was.

Though I think Gmail is the spawn of Satan(*), I recommend to the OP
a simple search. There are many, many pages describing how to run
Gmail in Thunderbird.

(*) because I won't accept Google's war on privacy. (It's with the
greatest reluctance that I even answer mail from Gmail accounts,
because Google arrogates to itself the right to store my words and
use them in marketing even though I don't have a Gmail account.)

I haven't tried Thunderbird in years, and I'm far from an expert on
it. But I do know this: it is *not* useless, and the problems you
describe are not Thunderbird problems; they certainly are a result of
your doing something wrong.

Thunderbird isn't my personal choice, but there are many thousands
(perhaps millions) of satisfied Thunderbird users.

And I've been able to setup
Yahoo
Gmail
Hotmail
Verizon
all working fine. Along with 3 news servers and 10-12
newsgroups. Thunderbird would not be one of the better news
clients if it were as bad as you say it is (OP that is).

I've got two Yahoo accounts, two Gmail accounts, two Comcast accounts
and a private account. I've got 5 SMTP servers set up. I've set
accounts up as POP3 and IMAP. I've got two NNTP accounts set up.
They've all worked well.

I think Thunderbird is NOT one of the better news clients, in fact I
pretty much hate it. But I think the email part of the program is quite
good. It's got a lot of features, especially with some well-chosen
extensions, and it just plain works.
