Fabrizio Follow this suggestion, the Weather Gadget thread is full of misinformation. Microsoft did *not* disable the Weather or Currency gadgets from working. If you have disabled gadgets, then all gadgets would have stopped working not just the Weather or Currency gadgets. In fact, all of those gadgets wouldn't even be able to run anymore. Fabrizio Oh no, not again ..... Please read the thread about *Weather Gadget* in this newsgroup. (77 answers) What you ask is no longer possible. Not true. The Weather Gadget thread is full of misinformation (usually happens when the thread becomes that long, full of opinionated people expressing their opinions). This is the real skinny: Weather gadget not working- Cannot connect to service - Microsoft Community http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...9b99a7a?page=1 Here's the proper solution to it: Hi everyone, I do not typically post on any type of forums but this issue really got me into some fun troubleshooting. I am an IT Engineer for the military so I just wanted to ensure anyone who gives this a shot that I have been a Windows expert for half of my life now. It SHOULD fix your issue, but if it does not it will not break anything so give it a shot if nothing else has worked for you. That said, I just spent 2 hours Googling and Binging trying to figure out why my father's stock weather gadget stopped working all of a sudden. Other machines in the house (all running Windows 7 Ultimate) were still working fine. This also affects the currency gagdet which he does not use. I tried at least 7 different fixes that I read online...fixes from toggling your region settings, to disabling and re-enabling the gadget unchecking automatically detect in IE, to creating an elevated privs dword in the registry, to renaming the cache folder under app data\user\local\microsoft\windows live\services. Nothing worked. Cannot Connect to Service popped up whenever dragging out the gadget no matter what I attempted. I also read on numerous sites that Microsoft disabled the weather and currency gadget in a recent Windows update. I can confirm that this is NOT true. They recommend you stop using gadgets due to security vulnerabilities, but there is no AUTOMATIC update that will actually disable said two stock gadgets. There is however, a manual Fix It download from Microsoft you can install to perform the disabling of the gadgets. This is a manual download/install, not an automatic update. So that brings me to what I did to fix it :-) So the renaming of the cache folder idea (which did not work) seemed like an idea I could expand upon. I tried a few different things and finally found the right combination of steps: A) Copy the following files and folder from a Windows 7 machine with a working stock weather gadget to a flash drive or network file sha 1. %localappdata%\affected user\local\microsoft\windows\windows live\services\cache\config.xml (just copy the file) 2. %localappdata%\affected user\local\microsoft\windows\windows sidebar\cache\168522d5-1082-4df2-b2f6-9185c31f9472 (copy entire folder which should contain one or more xml files) 3. %localappdata%\affected user\local\microsoft\windows\windows sidebar\settings.ini (just copy the file) B) Paste (OVERWRITING if necessary) the copied folder and files into the same locations on the machine whose stock weather gadget is not working. C) Drag the weather gadget back out and this time it should be working *** As I mentioned earlier, this issue effects both the weather and currency gadgets. I did not, however, attempt to fix the currency gadget. I would surmise that you would follow my same process above but also copy a second folder besides the one listed above (this time you would grab the one for the currency gadget) under %localappdata%\affected user\local\microsoft\windows\windows sidebar\cache. You would then paste the folder (overwriting if necessary) in the same location on the effected machine Yousuf Khan |

Do you have a full config.xml you could post ? (As long as there is no personally identifiable info in it) ******* I set up a VM, put Win7 RC in it, and it tried to reach gadgets.live.com/configW7.xml and the file is not there. That suggests Yousef's recipe will not work, unless you've successfully operated the Weather gadget in the past. My packet trace shows gadgets.live.com = a1796.gs.akamai.net weather.service.msn.com = a335.b.akamai.net and I think the gadgets.live.com one is causing the problem. The file, once received, is likely renamed to "config.xml". But the Weather gadget seems to be operational again (for now). I'll see how long it lasts. I saved the original config.xml file under a different name just to have the original values preserved to fall back on, not that I can think of any need for that arising. Thanks again. RW |

You probably know this, so ignore if you like. Two ways to get there are 1) Show Hidden Folders, and 2) by manually typing each folder name into Win Explorer and pressing Enter, and a third way is to simply copy/paste the entire path into Win Explorer. The first method is straightforward, so no more about that. The second and third methods don't require you to Show Hidden Folders, so those are the ones that I use most often, especially when I'm on someone else's machine and don't want to change their settings. Navigate to C:\Users\username. Now, in the location field, simply append \AppData Enter \Local Enter \Microsoft Enter \Windows Live Enter \Services Enter \Cache Enter. You can also type all or any part of that before hitting Enter; it doesn't have to be one level at a time. Does not work. You're right, that thread is full of stuff that doesn't apply, and the fix that Yousuf Khan cited does not work. However, a good answer that worked for me just now is on about page 10 of that thread. Here it is: (from http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...b99a7a?page=10) ============== Your 'solution' is a Hell lot more Complicated than mine! Just DO: ======== Edit the Config.XML file in: C:\Users\your name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Services\Cache Change the lines at the top with: services refresh="60"change from 60 to 45 service name="weather" operation interval="30"/change from 30 to 15 and also the lines at the bottom with: service name="stocks" operation interval="15"/change from 15 to 10 /service service name="currency" operation interval="30"/ change from 30 to 15 Save the file, and that's it - restart the Weather Gadget. Do you have a full config.xml you could post ? (As long as there is no personally identifiable info in it) Here's mine. There isn't much in it. I suspect this isn't where the good stuff is kept. //begin paste // ?xml version="1.0"? services refresh="60" service name="weather" operation interval="30"/ languages bunch of locales snipped... salt to taste lang en-US /lang /languages /service service name="stocks" operation interval="15"/ /service service name="currency" operation interval="30"/ /service /services //end paste// ******* I can find an example of a forecast, coming from the msn.com site, but I don't know if this is an actual URL from the weather gadget or not. So at the moment, this server still has data on it. This is today's date at least. http://weather.partners.msn.com/data...4-0370c4e8431f weatherdata weather weatherlocationcode="wc:USNY0996" weatherlocationname="New York, NY" weather forecast snipped... /weather /weatherdata As an example of what sort of info comes back. Maybe. Nearly identical to what I posted yesterday. Same location, even. ******* Amazing. Tool Nil's folder path... C:\Users\your name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Services\Cache Took your config.xml and trimmed it a little bit (fewer locales). (Maybe just the action of "saving" it, changes the date and makes it work? It's a "cache" after all, and needs to be validated once in a while.) This is the file I used, and grabbing the weather gadget, it works :-) Contents of the config.xml I used, plopped into above cachedir ... ?xml version="1.0"? services refresh="45" service name="weather" operation interval="15"/ languages lang en-CA /lang lang en-US /lang /languages /service service name="stocks" operation interval="10"/ /service service name="currency" operation interval="15"/ /service /services The gadget starts, pointed to New York, but entering my location manually, corrects that. Resizing the widget, reveals a forecast. Perfect! So to the folks who say that MS disabled all gadgets, I say phooey. :-) -- Char Jackson |
