Unable to use network after running wizard
I have WinXP Home. My computer has two embedded network
interface devices. I just use one, and its connected to a Linksys router/firewall which then plugs into a cablemodem. The other day I was having trouble configuring disk sharing with another computer on my home network and made the mistake of running the network configuration wizard. I guess I made the wrong choices because when I rebooted I couldn't connect to anything on the network. After realizing I had no network access I looked at the Network Connections panel. Apparently a bridge device was created. I didn't want a bridge device so I deleted it. Maybe that was a mistake. Nevertheless there appears to be no configuration which will work for me now and I've done a lot of research on this subject. I've tried both network devices in DHCP and static address mode. I've sniffed my network, and in DHCP mode my computer never does DHCP inquiries, it just does arp-whohas for the default IP address. With a static address I can ping my router and also ping my nameserver IP addresses but never get any DNS resolution. Apparently that's because my computer never does DNS queries to the stated nameservers. I've turned off ICF and ICS. I've run netsh and netdiag. As I write this I am booted from an alternate C partition I backed up a couple of months ago and obviously the hardware and wiring is okay. I don't see anything different about the port configurations. So what do I tweak, or uninstall/reinstall, in order to get my original connectivity back. What utility can I run that would shed light on this? |
