Windows Defender on Win8 - Updating Defs
It might be prudent to create a Scheduled Task for Defender on Win8 if WU is not configured to AU (Autoupdate) since
a. Defender doesn't have a user configurable setting to run a scheduled scan but it does perform a quick scan daily using current installed defs b. Defender doesn't update itself c. Defender doesn't indicate an an out-of date condition until the 7th day after the last def creation date and only if the Defender UI is opened by the user (since Defender does not provide a Notification Area icon) d. Win8 Action Center does perform a check and notify the user but only if the Action Center Security settings are configured to show messages for the respective item (Virus Protection, Spyware) and the defs are out-of-date using the same criteria as (c). e. Defender, if finding the presence of an intrusion, will only update defs if new def signatures apply to the detected intrusion. If more current defs are available they will be downloaded and applied to mitigate the intrusion. The Win8 Scheduled task to check for new defs and update from the Malware Protection Center is: C:\program files\windows defender\mpcmdrun.exe –SignatureUpdate –MMPC Fyi...you can also run the above from a command prompt. i.e. If you understand the above you should easily ascertain that Defender on Win8 (as-is currently released) does not operate the same as MSE on earlier o/s (XP, Vista, Win7) -- ....winston msft mvp consumer apps |

If you did then its' likely an earlier and a beta version of MSE was installed on Win8 - e.g. MSE v4.0.1512 since Win8 supposedly rejects production versions. I'll check it out, but I think MSE only shows spyware and virus definition versions. I also read the Related stories listed on that page. My head is spinning from analysis paralysis. g Thanks for the heads up. |
