Default launching safe mode to defrag

ROBIN, first, why are you going into safe-mode to do a
simple defrag? There is a set of protocols to be done
before a defrag. DiskCleanup. CKDISK(in startrun) and a
myriad of excellent free progs that are faster and more
effective than what you are trying to do.
EasyClean, DiskeeperLite, Dustbuster, Spybot are just a
few easily operated progs to be had for free.

The protocols mentioned below in bronco7's post below are simple and easy to
accomplish. Run these XP Tools in the exact order given:
A. Open by: Start/My Computer/right click the Hard Disk (usually c)/left
click "Properties".
B. Under the "General" Tab, run the Disk Cleanup Tool.
C. Next under the "Tools" Tab, run the "Error Checking" Tool. in the second
window select the top box. This is actually the "Check Disk" Tool being run
with the "/F" switch selected. Note: if you would have selected the bottom
box in the second window, you would be running the "Check Disk" Tool with
the /R switch [find and attempt to repair bad disk sectors plus execute the
"/F" switch also. You will be asked if you want to schedule this action for
the next startup. Select "Yes", close down, turn off the Computer and
restart so this Tool can run.
D. Go back to: My Computer/right click the Hard Disk
(drive)/Properties/Tools/Defragmentation, and run the Tool [or any other
Defragmentation tool you prefer such as Norton's "Speed Disk".
Hang on,
Gene K
