Trying to use chkdsk /sfc /scannow I insert the XPHome
disc when requested. However the program continues to
ask for the disc again and again and the program
eventually freezes. What can I do to run it fully?

Jim.

What problem are you having with IE 6? Please be as specific as you can,
and don't forget to say what version of Windows you have (including the
service pack.)

Not a good idea.

Assuming you've applied any Windows updates...
the files on your CD will be older than the ones on your machine
and you will probably just make things worse

Would you consider using IE7? It works fine in XP with SP2/3 and might
solve whatever problem you have.

Default Repairing IE6

When I log on to the Net, my address bar is left blank, my
home page URL doesn't appear. I use the down arrow to
display and click that URL and eventually that page loads.
However, before I get the page to load, clicking on Tools
produces a very abbreviated menu.
I can still click on Internet Options to confim my Hosts
file hadn't been changed - which it hasn't. However once
I am connected, the Tools menu opens fully, as it should.
I've also considered the possibility of a virus, but Spybot S&D
Adaware, Malwarebytes and a McAfee Alert search can find
no problems. I saw SuperAntiSpyware recommended
elsewhere in this NG and have downloaded that to try.
IE7 *always* corrupts my emails forcing me to revert to IE6.
I take philo's point about old files on my CD.
I have an XP Home/SP2 CD and installed SP3 recently.
I have tried the FixIE tool, which worked once only.
I haven't tried IE7 since I installed SP3, so will try this and
report back, meantime I'm open to any other ideas.

Many thanks to all who have responded,

Jim.

Delighted to advise that unlike my previous three attempts
IE7 installed without corrupting my email and news accounts.
SP3 must have made the difference.
SuperAntiSpyware only found eleven low risk items, so I
guess my PC is virus-free.

Thanks again, Jim.
