Okay, so who hasn't gotten their invitation to Win 10 upgrade yet?
So I posted a similar question a few weeks ago. I have two computers at
home (a laptop & a desktop), and neither of them have been given an invite to upgrade to Win 10 yet, even though I reserved my upgrade 1 or 2 months before the first date. At that time people suggested that I download the Win 10 ISO and burn it to a DVD and upgrade it that way. So I experimented with that idea, on the laptop and upgraded it via the DVD method. I quickly experienced some annoying trackpad and keyboard issues on it, and was eventually forced to downgrade back down to Windows 7. I figured that perhaps that's why the laptop was not yet invited and that it must be waiting for proper drivers for the trackpad and keyboard. So I'm still waiting on both machines for the invite. I've even cancelled the reservation and re-registered it to see if perhaps that'll speed up the invite, it didn't. I mean are simple device drivers that much of a problem for Win 10 still? I wish they'd explain what they're waiting for. Yousuf Khan |

The problem was with the drivers that were installed in the Windows 7 that was being upgraded. Updating the drivers to the latest versions cleared up the problem and allowed the upgrade to proceed normally. (Ultimately, however, the upgrade did not perform up to expectations and I had to revert back down to Windows 7, simply because the hardware itself was insufficient to perform adequately in the new OS.) -- //Steve// |

Yousuf Khan C:\Windows\System32\GWX config.xml ? http://www.techrepublic.com/article/...-78-1-systems/ During the UpgradeDetected phase UpgradeDownloadInProgress, UpgradeDownloaded, UpgradeReadyToInstall, UpgradeReadySetupInProgress, UpgradeSetupCompatBlock, ---- parked here maybe ??? I suspect the reason that I haven't received an invitation to upgrade to Windows 10 is because, although I have Essential Upgrades switched on, I have Optional Upgrades switched off. -- John Hall "Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger." Did you go to the laptop manufacturer's website to look for info and/or drivers? There's still a ton of stuff, mainly somewhat non mainstream hardware and software that doesn't work right in Windows 10 no matter what you do. -- Brian Gregory (in the UK). Yousuf Khan If that was the reason (trackpad drivers are a common issue [1]) the collected telemetry during the upgrade and after use of Win10 on your system and similar system's hardware could easily be a factor in the GWX not offering (or delaying) Win10 being offered. i.e. the Reservation only places a device in a queue. The place in the queue is not permanent when known issues can occur. [1] Fyi...a variety of laptops have had Touchpad driver updated. My i3 Acer Laptop has had 3 driver updates via WU (all auto installed) since Aug 2 on Win10. The latest driver update provided all functionality that existed on Win7/8x. The upgrade o/s was 8.1 and it never received the GWX notice, Win10 was installed using MCT created USB Win10 Pro media. Prior to that the same device on Insider Build's had 2 other Track Pad driver updates (some improved the prior, other showed no changes). Acer still shows the original driver (CY 2010) as the latest. -- ...winston msft mvp windows experience |

I ask that question a lot. So many people upgrade for no good reason other than it's the newest version. At least you have a good reason. As far as your problem: run Microsoft's hardware compatibilty software on your two systems. There may be drivers that aren't available yet, and that's why there's been no little upgrade to 10 icon. That is, the upgrade would fail. Give it time. MS always rushes their releases. Stef |

Well, obviously not until some titles come out that use it, but having it already installed and already stabilized before the titles come out is worth something. Yousuf Khan |

Yes, it's been how many years since multicore processors were introduced, and Microsoft still managed to come up with a single-threaded DX11 after that?!? So I'm happy that I'll finally be able to fully utilize my 6-core processor soon. As far as your problem: run Microsoft's hardware compatibilty software on your two systems. I've unreserved my Win 10 upgrade offer, and then the GWX shows that both my systems are fully compatible with Windows 10 as far as the GWX is concerned, and that I should re-reserve. So I'm thinking that GWX is just a first-line compatibility check, perhaps it's passing along more detailed system info to MS, and they got some more detailed info about whether it's really compatible or not yet? Well, if there's one thing I've learned over the years about Microsoft, such utilities are not foolproof. But try a 10 upgrade on the laptop. Laptops are more problematical than desktops. Just do a full clone before to be safe. I don't trust W10's "reversion" capability. If that goes okay, then do the desktop. Stef |
