Mail 8.1
I have been using Live mail 2012 since Windows 8 came out , Windows 8
mail does not work with POP3 accts which I am on. But finaly out of curiosity I set up a Gmail acct and set up Mail through this account, It works and I can see My pop3 mail OK but This mail program seems so simplistic and useless! am I expecting too much? Do other people use it or like it? I am going to dump it and continue using 2012 which I am used to, I use Thunderbird as my newsreader. Regards Rene |

Regards Rene I use Thunderbird for both my Email and Newsgroups. It did take a little while to get things to my liking, such as folders for various correspondence and the message filters needed so the mail actually goes into those folders. For me the early Thunderbird versions would choke on any little problem line problem and "forget" the password needed to access individual accounts. Now it just complains or asks for a new password but I ignore it and it uses the same password on the next try. I am using it for accounts on Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, and Outlook among others, all using POP3. I suspect I might be grandfathered in one or two of them as I don't pay for POP3 access at any of them. Thunderbird will also do Imap as well but I never liked it personally so I just stuck to the POP3. Anyway if you tell your current email program and or server to leave the mail on the server and not delete it after downloading it you can test your present mailboxes with Thunderbird and your present mail program just to see if it can be tailored to what you like. |

How to Geek newsletter recently had an article about pop being outdated and everyone should go IMAP. So I made a new profile in TB and tried setting up all my accounts as IMAP. And it worked for Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo. but I have Verizon and they don't support it. But I saw no benefit in IMAP. Actually it was a bit more complex. And seeing that I have no smart phone or tablet, that needs to be synced then it really has no bearing. But for the OP, TB will do IMAP on all those servers easily. |

Regards Rene Win 8x Mail client never has supported POP3 and will most likely never will. Win10 Mail client is unlikely to support POP3 too. Supported protocols are EAS and IMAP Gmail is capable of IMAP in Win8x mail client. Gmail can be used to aggregate other POP3 accounts into Gmail allowing Win8x mail client to pull(sync) down the aggregated content. Likewise, all MSFT accounts of the form Hotmail/Live/MSN/Outlook.com can be used to aggregate POP3 mail (even auto-filtered via rule to user created folders upon receipt to the MSFT account Inbox). While Windows Live Mail 2012 (part of Windows Essentials 2012 suite) supports POP3, IMAP and Http(DeltaSync)....just like Windows 8x. mail client...its design intent is for use with MSFT accounts (Hotmail, Msn, Live, Outlook.com) due to integration and synchronization t across apps, applications contacts, calendar that are mirrored services in the MSFT account web UI. Just like the design intent noted above...using a MSFT (Hotmail/Live/MSn/Outlook.com) for aggregating POP3 accounts, Win8x (and most likely Win10) design intent is to use a MSFT account for Windows logon. -- ....winston msft mvp consumer apps |

I stopped using MS mail apps since MS claims they own your mail. Been
using Thunderbird for both POP3/IMAP without any issues for some time now (since v3.x). I now use MesNews as newsreader because Tbird just doesn't do it for me as well anymore! Not saying it's not a good choice, though!g -- Garry Free usenet access at http://www.eternal-september.org ClassicVB Users Regroup! comp.lang.basic.visual.misc microsoft.public.vb.general.discussion |
