Default how to migrate to new computer?

I'm running WindowsXP on a Dell computer purchased in 2002. It's
been great; no hardware problems; just what turned out to be software
issues - firewall mostly. It's time to purchase a new one, hopefully
with a smaller footprint. I'm considering an iMac desktop and a new
Dell 8500 CPU as options.

My problem is transferring Access & Excel databases & spreadsheets
from the '02 (I think) Professional Ed to the newest version - 2010 I
believe running under Windows 7. Can this be done?

Also - can it be done if I decide to go with an iMac?

All my improtant data - financial, medical, etc ares in those
databases; can't just kill them off. What to do?

Thanks for any advice!

Cheers,
AB

Copy the data from XP PC to a USB hard disk or use a NT Share and Share the data over the
LAN.

The replacement computer can access the USB Hard Drive (sneaker net) or the NT Share
(Ethernet).

Your Access and Excel databases and spreadsheets made with the earlier
version of Office can be opened and edited with the 2010 version as
well. You can copy all those files from My Documents (or wherever you
have them stored) to the Windows 7 Documents Library (or wherever you
want them). You can do that as David mentioned, using a USB stick or
external drive to transfer, or you can set up a network between the two
computers and transfer via that.

If there are more files and settings you want to transfer, you can also
do it using Windows 7's built-in Easy Transfer wizard.

I don't do Macs. You should be able to manually transfer files from the
PC to a Mac with no problem. You need Office for Mac installed to
access your Office database and spreadsheet files. There are other
programs that also access Office files, but you may lose some of the
formatting in the conversion process.

Thanks for your responses. Guess I'll be able to get the data
migrated but will probably have to do alot of reformatting.

Will probably wait for Windows 8 before buying new equipment.

Reformatting ?
For what - Data ? Media ?

Don't!

Never jump on the band wagon os a new OS just because it's a new OS. Always
wait until the first Service Pack is released.

If you need a new PC now, get a new PC now.

You won't have to do any reformatting of your Excel and Access files, if
you stick with a Windows PC and any version of Office. I think you
misunderstood my reply.

I would NOT wait for Windows 8! I agree with David. Being an early
adopter is not in the best interest of your productivity.
(Also, I have a feeling Windows 8 may be another Windows ME/Windows
Vista-type flop on desktop systems that don't use a touch screen).

OK, will go for Windows 7 if I ultimately buy a new PC, or even for
the iMac, as I can partition to run Apple's OS and MS.
