It is probably something to do with the software that you are using. I
am using Corel's Word Perfect suite, Adobe Reader, Firefox, and
Thunderbird, and I open hyperlinks from them all of the time. (as
recently as an hour ago.)

Check the default settings for the various extensions.

The only trick is to use your grey matter if you have enough of them.

You need to click on the link and at the same time press CTRL button.
This has always been the case and this is still the case in Windows 10.

Word and Excel can disable Hyperlink at the request of the user but you
haven't said anything about how exactly you are clicking or which
version of Office you are talking about. As I see it, you are here to
promote AVG Anti-virus software and that is why you posted a link to
their website.

In future please refrain from doing this. You won't get any assistance
in respect of your genuine questions if you continue to do so.

Good luck.

Yes it does. See below.

To try this, in Word 2016 running under Windows 10, I just opened a
..docx file with an html link within it. Double-clicking on the link
doesn't open it, but right-clicking on it and choosing open does.

I didn't bother checking in Excel but it's probably the same there.

Have you tried CTRL + click?

Your "signature" says you are using AVG.

Does AVG have something to do with it ?

Normally, it would be Windows Defender which meddles
in user activity...

*******

If a machine is running Windows Defender, you can
use this from an Administrator Powershell.

Set-MpPreference -DisableRealtimeMonitoring 1

To turn it back on again later, you can use

Set-MpPreference -DisableRealtimeMonitoring 0

This is important in cases where high I/O is expected
and you cannot afford the I/O rate to drop to 20% of normal.

No such problems here using Excel 2016.

Is this any different from disabling real time monitoring using the Windows
Defender settings tab?
As it's only a tick box, it's surely quicker & easier.

You can also exclude processes and files from the defender scan using
the settings.

In fact, after CTRL+Click in word, I had "this operation has been
canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact
you system administrator".
for info, I'm using Firefox, I removed Edge.
