Default XP Scan stops at 90% and give error then goes into Windows okay

Hi,

When I start XP, I get the blue screen and it scans.

It gets to 90% then says there is an error, but it then goes into
Windows and it is okay.

I tried to defrag and get much the same error.

Any help please?

To start with: Which version of Windows XP do you have (including the
service pack number.)

What exactly does "the blue screen" say?

What "it" is doing a scan?

you probably referring to check disk
that is scheduled to run at boot time.

what you need to try is to boot with
"any" xp cd.

then after it setups and produces the
first screen select "repair".

this will open the recovery console and
provide you with a disk system prompt.

next run the following commands:

chkdsk /r
fixboot

then exit, remove cd and the scheduled
check disk should complete and you can
proceed into the desktop as usual.
