Default Internet Explorer 8 fails to open

I run IE8 and XP. I do most browsing in Firefox but for Windows
Updates and a few other things I must use IE. Today IE8 refuses to
initialize unless I right-click choose Start Without Addons. At one
point I would get a message about some Reminder failing with what
looked like a memory address. The error seemed to change when I
disabled WeCare addon, or at least the second part of it (the first
part had 'Disable' greyed out. I Removed WeCare in XP's Add/Remove
Programs - no help with problem. IE8 starts to open, then immediately
closes without error message - unless I choose to open without
add-ons. There are a BUNCH of add-ons and pretty laborious to Disable
one at a time. Also I suspect that it might require a re-boot to fully
settle the change into the system to test my change. Any suggestions?

Disable all add-ons.

If there are any you think you really need, just add them one at a time.

That's any easy way to narrow things down and chances are you need few
if any of the add-ons.

I have disabled all addons that IE8 is capable of Disabling. Rebooted,
same problem - will not start unless Start Without Addons. Searching
(with Firefox) just now I note there is an IE9 available that works in
XP. Maybe I should just deinstall IE8 and install an IE9?

IE8 is the highest version that will work with XP.

When you said that you have disabled all add-ons that can be disabled,
that implies there are some still there.

Have you investigated things like this:

Thank you. I did finally find the problem. 'automatic tab search' or
some such name, that was deletable in Add/Remove Programs. That web
site you posted looks very helpful though.

Glad you got that all sorted out. Add ons can be a PITA.

I use Firefox and some of the unwanted add-ons can only be deleted
manually. I think all browsers should make it very easy to completely
remove any unwanted additions.
