No updates here since March 10, so this afternoon I installed
what was
offered (89 "important" plus 2 of 5 optional). No KB29522664

Optional KB23976978 is described thus:
"This update performs diagnostics on the Windows systems that
participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement
Program.
These diagnostics help determine whether compatibility issues
may be
encountered when the latest Windows operating system is
installed. This
update will help Microsoft and its partners ensure
compatibility for

system."

I did not install it.

The following link was in another thread (maybe also NG), a
year old but
still relevant, I'd think:
http://arstechnica.com/information-t...o-windows-7-8/

Went there, and uninstalled 3 of the 4 KBs mentioned in it:
3022345,
3068708, 3080149, 3075249 (not present here). No problems (so
far).
Feel slightly less exposed now. :-)
But I wonder which KBs have replaced the ones listed.

It's still relevant to me, I just installed w7 on a machine and
will
keep it that way, thanks.

Do you know if anyone has compiled a list of non-telemetry
updates that
are recommended for w7 64 bit? I want to install all of the
security
related patches, but avoid the telemetry as much as possible.

I have GWX Control Panel running but I *enabled* W10 updates just in
case they try to get tricky again. As far as other updates go, I
have a
list that is no longer comprehensive, but when I do update, I
immediately run Blackbird afterward. So far, so good, but what a
royal
pain.
http://www.getblackbird.net/

I hope you noticed that Blackbird hasn't been updated since July 26,
2016. Also, now that M$ has moved to cumulative updates, I'm sure
that
BB doesn't take care of telemetry updates that are bundled in the
cumulatives.

I know, but what other option do I have?

Frankly, none thanks to M$'s maneuver. That is, other than completely
turning off WU and removing all the cumulative updates. You could do
this in any event:

http://www.ghacks.net/2016/10/26/tur...ience-program/

to eliminate some of the telemetry.

I turned off WU and am installing updates manually, it's slow but clean.
Thanks for the link, I hadn't seen that before.

But how do you get around the bundling of updates (AKA "Cumulative
updates") which often include unwanted "features"? With them, you have
to take the good with the bad.

It's gonna be a minute. According to his FB page, it's still in alpha,
but....

Never heard of this before. Thanks!

I'm hoping I can install the bundle then uninstall the individuals I
don't want.

I found a partial listing of non-telemetry updates here

Using that list and this tool I think I'm good.

Thanks, Mike. I'll keep an eye on this topic. I recently put my W7
machine back online temporarily to run WU. I wasn't too worried because
I normally have the machine offline. Still, I want to be able to have
more granular control over updating than M$ allows.

Thanks for the link. At this point my trust level for Microsoft is so
low that I wouldn't be surprised if some future updates change your
value of this setting, or simply ignore it. Still, it's something we
can do for the time.

I think, for about the last 15 months, the single most serious threat
to the continued smooth running of my computers has been Windows
Updates.

I tried manually installing updates that were not telemetry related but
it was taking an extremely long time scanning to see if each update was
going to be installed, so I just enabled WU after manually updating to
speed it up, then ran *this script to remove the telemetry updates. I'll
manually install future updates if needed but I'm leaving WUSA disabled.
I'm going to block **telemetry urls in the router as well.
