Default How to run Tor on Windows (with a single installation executable)

Is there an Orwall/Orbot-like free Tor software for Windows?

I was looking for an /easy/single-executable setup to torrify all ports for
Windows, and I found Orwall/Orbot for Android does exactly what I want, so I
know the concept exists.

a. You start one app
b. That app torrifies /all/ ports
c. Until you close that app

That's all I want, but for Windows.
Does it exist?

Notice this is not the tor browser bundle (aka Orweb), which is a nice
setup, but the browser bundle only handles HTTP/HTTPS ports.

Googling for what I wanted for Windows, I easily found Orbot for Android:

Is there an Orwall/Orbot-like free Tor software package for Windows?

The Tor project has been reducing the number of available variants for
years now, we've got nothing left. Note that Tor only handles TCP so you
cannot route UDP through Tor. What you want is Vidalia, but it is no
longer maintained (you can install it tho, it probably still works with
the current client).

See:
https://trac.torproject.org/projects...ldmapVidaliago
https://people.torproject.org/~erinn...alone-bundles/

To grab Tor only without the browser:
https://www.torproject.org/dist/torb...32-0.2.8.7.zip

You setup the proxy using Vidalia, and then you tell whatever
application you want to use it:

There is the tor browser bundle, for Windows, but I don't know of an
Orbot-like (or Orwall-like) easy setup for Windows like there is for
Android.

All I'm looking for is Tor to be easy, which it *is* on Android, so, why not
for Windows?

Note that Tor only handles TCP so you
cannot route UDP through Tor.

I didn't realize that, but I, myself, never choose to use TCP or UDP, so,
I'm not that sophisticated of a user to know or care what protocol my
packets are using.

That's why I want a simple single executable, like Android has.

What you want is Vidalia, but it is no
longer maintained (you can install it tho, it probably still works with
the current client).

Oh, I've looked it up. And even tried, and failed.
Vidalia. Tor. Privoxy. Socks. Yuck.
It's a mess.

And, since it's a mess, I'll never get it right.
And, for something like this, it has to be reasonably right to work.

BTW, I'm sure if there as a decent TUTORIAL that actually worked, I'd be
able to follow it. But I've never found a single tutorial that works for
Windows for Tor/Vidalia/Privoxy/Socks, setup.

That's exactly why I want what is already on Android.
Orbot for Windows.

See:
https://trac.torproject.org/projects...ldmapVidaliago
https://people.torproject.org/~erinn...alone-bundles/

You setup the proxy using Vidalia, and then you tell whatever
application you want to use it:

Been there. Failed multiple times.
Too complex.
Hence the desire for a single executable, like Android has.

Well the Tor Browser Bundle *is* easy ;-) But we used to have the
Vidalia bundle, and *that* was easy too. By the way I think I know of a
way to funnel all traffic through Tor: Use a VPN. The AirVPN client for
instance can funnel all traffic through Tor so you don't have to
configure every application that you use to tell them to use
127.0.0.1:8118 as a proxy. I am not sure about UDP traffic however. See
https://airvpn.org/tor/

That's why I want a simple single executable, like Android has.

When you run Orbot on Android, does the VPN icon appear in the top bar?
That might be how they are doing it - you can do it too on Windows (like
with AirVPN) but I'm not sure how easy or not it is, I haven't tried it
yet (man I wish they'd kept the Vidalia bundle, it was so easy!)

Oh, I've looked it up. And even tried, and failed.
Vidalia. Tor. Privoxy. Socks. Yuck.

Lol, I feel your pain. The bundle I have on my old WinXP is
Vidalia+Tor+Polipo, so 3 programs to setup; unfortunately, that bundle
is long gone...

And, since it's a mess, I'll never get it right.
And, for something like this, it has to be reasonably right to work.

Privoxy is too much trouble for me; Polipo is simpler to configure, but
you don't need Polipo either, you can use Tor and Vidalia and nothing
else - you can also use Tor only and nothing else but then you have to
configure the TORRC file manually. I agree with you, finding a well
written simple guide to setting-up Tor on Windows is near impossible.

I agree that the TBB on Windows is exactly what I want (but for all ports).
Something *easy* for Windows *should* exist.

Why isn't there a single executable to set up Tor on Windows like there is
for Android already?

(Tor for Android is easy https://www.torproject.org/docs/android.html.en ).

But we used to have the
Vidalia bundle, and *that* was easy too.

I tried all that but I failed.
It's more complicated than you think for us noobs.

Vidalia + Privoxy + Socks + Polipo = Tor

I don't even know what each one does.
If there was a decent Windows tutorial that actually worked, that would be
ok. But they never seem to exist in the form that they need to be to make
them easy for noobs like the Android Tor is.

Most Windows tutorials say something like "install vidalia and then
configure privoxy to accept connections". Yeah. Right. That's useless (for
someone like me).

That's why I seek a single executable.
We know it exists (for Android).

I'm just trying to find the Orbot for Windows port.

By the way I think I know of a
way to funnel all traffic through Tor: Use a VPN.

I already use OpenVPN extensively.
At least that is a single executable on Windows:

1. Download & install OpenVPN free ware
2. Download any free openvpn configuration file off the web
3. Doubleclick on that configuration file
Voila! You're on VPN in a split second.

It's so easy to be on VPN in Windows that I'm just looking for the same ease
for Tor.

The AirVPN client for
instance can funnel all traffic through Tor so you don't have to
configure every application that you use to tell them to use
127.0.0.1:8118 as a proxy. I am not sure about UDP traffic however. See
https://airvpn.org/tor/

That diagram is interesting:
https://airvpn.org/static/pages/tor/airvpn_with_tor.png

I don't know what "air" VPN is, so looking around at that page, I get
worried instantly about the "no logging" that it says at https://airvpn.org
since I know that's a false statement (everyone logs something).

What they mean (but didn't say it) was that they don't save your day-to-day
activities, but they all log your connections (at the very least) so I'm a
bit worried that they're not being up front right off the bat.

Still ... looking deeper ... air vpn supports "OpenVPN over SSH", which is
the standard that any VPN must support. So that's good. It's not a free
service though, which is bad because you have to jump through too many hoops
to be anonymous when you have to pay money (I don't do bitcoin, for
example).

So, the bad news is that air vpn is no better than open vpn (which it uses,
it seems) but the good news is that this implies that I can use openvpn with
tor, so maybe that's the way to torrify all ports on Windows?

That's why I want a simple single executable, like Android has.

When you run Orbot on Android, does the VPN icon appear in the top bar?

I don't know what you mean by that question.

There's a little onion that appears in the top bar of the phone when I run
Orbot on Android.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...roject.android

But that's a setting which you can unset so that it doesn't show the Tor
onion.

That might be how they are doing it - you can do it too on Windows (like
with AirVPN) but I'm not sure how easy or not it is, I haven't tried it
yet (man I wish they'd kept the Vidalia bundle, it was so easy!)

I didn't find Vidalia all that easy!

Anyway, all I really want is the ease of using Orbot but on Windows.

1. You install Orbot for Windows
2. You doubleclick it
3. Voila! You're on Tor on Windows.

It's already that easy for Android.
I don't see how Windows should be different.

Oh, I've looked it up. And even tried, and failed.
Vidalia. Tor. Privoxy. Socks. Yuck.
It's a mess.

Lol, I feel your pain. The bundle I have on my old WinXP is
Vidalia+Tor+Polipo, so 3 programs to setup; unfortunately, that bundle
is long gone...

I failed every time I tried.
Until Obot came along.
Then I was working in a minute!

It was really easy.
That's just what I want for Windows.

Orbot for Windows.

And, since it's a mess, I'll never get it right.
And, for something like this, it has to be reasonably right to work.
BTW, I'm sure if there as a decent TUTORIAL that actually worked, I'd be

Yes. It's impossible to find a decent guide for Tor setup on Windows.
If anyone knows of a Tor for Windows like there is for Android, that would
work beautifully.

Meanwhile, I'll start digging into how to add VPN and Tor together somehow,
as you suggested (but with OpenVPN instead of Air VPN).

What do you use to increase your anonymity, if not Tor?

That's exactly what you should NEVER do. Always use real IDs!
