How do I disable my new 64-bit W7 HPE SP1's autorun & autoplay?
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/967715 shows how, but it seems to
be for older Windows. I also do not see any NoDriveTypeAutoRun in my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\Explorer\ and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\policies\Explorer\ registry (don't have Gpedit.msc since I don't have a higher edition). I want to keep my new machine secured and clean from physical connections' infections. Thank you in advance. -- "There are things in the Universe billions of years older than either of our races. They are vast, timeless, and if they are aware of us at all, it is as little more than ants and we have as much chance of communicating with them as an ant has with us. We know. We've tried and we've learned that we can either stay out from underfoot or be stepped on. They are a mystery and I am both terrified and reassured that to know that there are still wonders in the Universe, that we have not explained everything. Whatever they are, Miss Sakai, they walk near Sigma 957 and they must walk there alone." --G'Kar - Mind War Note: A fixed width font (Courier, Monospace, etc.) is required to see this signature correctly. /\___/\ Ant(Dude) @ http://antfarm.ma.cx (Personal Web Site) / /\ /\ \ Ant's Quality Foraged Links: http://aqfl.net | |o o| | \ _ / If crediting, then use Ant nickname and AQFL URL/link. Thank you in advance. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...-turn-off.html ******* The autorun.inf blocker uses a neat trick. This workaround is separate from NoDriveTypeAutoRun. Someone invented this, because they felt the dude at Microsoft was half-hearted about NoDriveTypeAutoRun. The Microsoft approach wasn't covering USB sticks with phantom CD drives inside (the kind they leaving in company parking lots to inject industrial espionage software). http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...ely-block.html Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf] @="@SYSoesNotExist" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoAutorun"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoAutorun"=- The DoesNotExist prevents the inf from working. https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA09-020A Paul ******* The article tells you what to do. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/967715 To disable Autorun yourself on operating systems that do not include Gpedit.msc, follow these steps: HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\pol icies\Explorer\ NoDriveTypeAutorun DWORD 0x000000FF Value data box, type 0xFF to disable all types of drives Of course, they don't cover the case where the key doesn't exit. You can create the key. I experimented with GPEDIT, turned it ON and OFF, and it left behind the key :-) You need to create a key below "Explorer", and the data type is DWORD. Just as 967715 explains (sorta). Postimage is going to disappear from the net soon, so this picture won't last. https://s18.postimg.org/5annpcjzd/no...ypeautorun.gif Paul |

I say "should" because I did something to expand the Conrol Panel to show all options without having to navigate through a sequence of icons; but I do not remember what I did for that. Thus, I do not know if "AutoPlay" displays in a vanilla Control Panel or if you have to navigate to it through other Control Panel icons. -- David E. Ross Donald Trump claims everyone likes him.
