Greetings --

Your point? I've seen people cross the road without looking, and
they weren't hit by an on-coming bus *that* time. As they say in the
investment game, "Past performance is no indication of future
profits."

Greetings --

Not if one knows how to follow the relatively simple instructions
that come with them, and know a little about computers and software in
general. Most applications, whether anti-viral or otherwise, cause
problems _only_ if used(misused) by the willfully ignorant.

I'd say that response puts him in both categories; a fool
and a masochist, and I'd add that it has little knowledge of
the real world to be able to say that so emphatically.
Personally I hope he really has no protection, but it's
abhorrant that his closed mind gets tossed at the
unsupecting newbie. That's akin to abuse.

That's very bad advice. Given today's

widely-publicized and
well-known hostile Internet environment, only a fool or

a masochist
would go on-line without both a firewall and antivirus

protection.
People really shouldn't need to be told to use a

firewall or an
antivirus application, no more than they should need to

be told not to
stick their hands into an open flame.

You'll get nearly as many differing opinions as you

will
responses.

I used, and recommended, Norton Antivirus and then

Norton Internet
Security, for many years, on Win98, WinNT, Win2K, and

WinXP, all
without any significant problems. I had used McAfee

prior to that.
But it's been several years since I've been tempted to

try McAfee
products. Their quality seemed to take a steep

nose-dive after they
were acquired by Network Associates.

However, when my subscription to Symantec's updates

for Norton
Internet Security 2002 came up for renewal (at a cost

substantially
higher than the preceding year's subscription), I

decided to try less
expensive solutions. I downloaded and installed the free

version of
GriSoft's AVG

(http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ) and the
free version of Sygate's Personal Firewall
(http://smb.sygate.com/free/default.php ). Both have

proven to be
easily installed, easy to use, and quite effective.

Additionally, I
was pleasantly surprised to see a small but very

noticeable
improvement in my PC's performance, once I'd replaced

the Symantec
product.

Let's add narcissistic idiot to the list of mornonic

This is absolute CRAP. A large number of people get

I'm afraid you can't educate ANY of the users, other than
the types who would follow a prejudiced moron like you. You
will be exposed anywhere you spread your hate and prejudiced
teenie minded sloth in public. Go back and look for that
used sock - you need it.
Oh, and if you think you're ****ing anyone off, you

The point is very simple. If you keep your system updated, the firewall on and
DO Not open unknown attachments you do NOT have to mess up your computer
installing AV programs. Past performance? Have had personal computers since
early eighties.

with a little intelligence does not need to spend money on AV programs.

You're so ignorant. Why don't you go to school. Take some courses on how to
win friends and influence people. Learn how to converse using facts instead of
emotion and learn how to talk without name calling. Where were you raised??

You are missing the point entirely. How do you KNOW 100% that an attachment
you get from a KNOWN source is virus free without scanning it yourself? Your
KNOWN source may be infected without them knowing it - it happens all the
time!
