Default sp2

I have tried to install sp2 on my friends new computer
more than once , his os is xp home after installing sp2
the computer locks on boot up with the result that
windows as to be reinstalled after each time . sp1 is
auto loaded with windows xp ,i contacted the service
person from where he bought the computer and was informed
that if he wanted to install sp2 on his system he would
need a new motherboard .the computer is only one month
old could this be true? please help . Regards ray

I have the same problem with a new computer. SP2 can not be installed - =
the computer freezes after restart and thus SP2 can not be uninstalled =
as well!

This could be what you need:

Critical Update for Windows XP (KB885626)
This non-security critical update helps resolve an issue where a
limited number of systems running a BIOS without production support for
Intel Pentium 4 and Intel Celeron D processors based on Prescott C-0
Stepping can potentially hang on Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation.
After you install this update, you may have to restart your computer.
How to Uninstall
Uninstall via Add or Remove Programs.

Thanks. I flashed the BIOS and it solved the problem.
