I receive E-mail attachments on my MS Home edition laptop which I can not
open. It pops up and states to close something and then goes back to the
E-mail folder. I assume it is comming from Word and I have works. Is there
anyway to recieve these without giving MS a couple hundred for Word.
Thanks

First off, it helps to know exactly what type of file you're trying to open. To
do that go to Control Panel - Folder Options and click on the View tab. In the
Advanced Settings box, remove the check mark from the box next to "Hide
extensions for known file types". You should now see a file extension after the
files name. A word document may end with the .doc extension. You can use Word
Viewer 2003 for this type of file.

Word Viewer 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

If the document ends with the .docx file extension it means it was created with
Word 2007. To view that file you'll need to also install the compatibility pack.

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File
Formats
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Here are viewers for other Office files that you may encounter.

Excel Viewer 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/i...splaylang%3den

PowerPoint Viewer 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/i...splaylang%3den

PowerPoint Viewer 2007
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/i...splaylang%3den

Note: You can go back and recheck that setting in Folder Options if you'd rather
not see file extensions after you've downloaded any attachments.

If you're still unable to open the file, post back and let us know the file
extension.

Good luck

What is your e-mail client? What is the file extension of the attachments?
What pops up and asks you to close what?

If you determine that it really is an MS Word attachment, then you can
download and install the MS Word Viewer.

I see that some of you are recommending downloading MS Word Viewer instead of
Open Office. Why is that? Just curious...

He indicated that he wanted to solve the email problem
and not find a free and more robust replacement
for MS works or an MS Office equivalent.

Why offer a fully-loaded SUV when they need a sub-compact?

They have one attachment to an email they cannot open. They are not trying
to (or they haven;t stated they are) create a new document or read several
different formats without purchasing Microsoft Office 2007.

Thanks for the help. The file is .docx and the sender states it was done on
Office 2007. I did the download, (1: 20min.) installed and then it asks for
a product code. Since I don't have one, I used the one from my old MS word -
(not good) and the one from new works (also not valid)
Thanks for the help though and I appreciate it. I did find a way to open a
basic Word file. I send myself a E-mail with the attachment, open it with a
12 year old computer that has word. I doesn't work that way though with the
DOCX file

Here are some other options you can try.

1. Download this version of Word Viewer. It should be able to open .docx files.

Word Viewer
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

2. Ask the person who sent you the attachment to save the file as a Word 97 -
2003 document and resend the email message. The file will now have a .doc
extension.

3. Post your question to the Microsoft Word newsgroup.

Good luck
