Default Device Driver Ports Strangeness

This is odd. Ports(COM & LPT) has 6 ports. COM1, COM3, COM 4, LPT1,
COM6, COM5. If, say, I remove a device, then no ports are removed from
the list. What's up with that.

I'm trying to determine the port # of a drive I remove. In particular, a
camera device.

Ports(COM & LPT)
Comport (COM1)
Intel($) Active ...SOL(COM3)
Keyspan USB Serial Port(COM4)
Printer Port(LPT1)
Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port(COM6)
USB Serial Port (COM5)

W7 and later keep a list of all current peripherals, ie, those that
are/were plugged in. If you plug in a new device the list will be
updated. If you plug a device in a different port, same thing, but
Windows may see it as "new", and go through the "preparing device for
use" thing all over again.

HTH

So if I take a device offline and reboot, then I won't see it in the list?

USBview is the program.

It doesn't exist.

BTW, my idea of rebooting did not work. All six ports stayed in position.

No, it doesn't. KenW made a typo. But all you had to do was to enter
the incorrect name in the search box and it would, within about one
second, find the correct name, "USBDeview".

I use Ctrl-F to find things. It opens a window at the bottom of the msg,
and you just enter what you are looking for.

COM: and LPT: ports will have nothing to do with USB cameras

Is that more or less than a scintilla? :-)

Windows does some funny labeling around ports; I am pretty sure (but
100%) that I have seen USB ports labeled as COMx.

This is not the same: I also just installed a driver for some software
that drives a device that requires a USB to COM port driver. It's an OBD
device that seems to incorporate a USB to RS232 chip.

I've seen the same on software-defined radios as well.

I'm pretty much unqualified to comment any further on that stuff,
however :-)
