Device Driver Ports Strangeness
This is odd. Ports(COM & LPT) has 6 ports. COM1, COM3, COM 4, LPT1,
COM6, COM5. If, say, I remove a device, then no ports are removed from the list. What's up with that. I'm trying to determine the port # of a drive I remove. In particular, a camera device. Ports(COM & LPT) Comport (COM1) Intel($) Active ...SOL(COM3) Keyspan USB Serial Port(COM4) Printer Port(LPT1) Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port(COM6) USB Serial Port (COM5) |

But all you had to do was to enter the incorrect name in the search box and it would, within about one second, find the correct name, "USBDeview". |

Windows does some funny labeling around ports; I am pretty sure (but 100%) that I have seen USB ports labeled as COMx. This is not the same: I also just installed a driver for some software that drives a device that requires a USB to COM port driver. It's an OBD device that seems to incorporate a USB to RS232 chip. I've seen the same on software-defined radios as well. I'm pretty much unqualified to comment any further on that stuff, however :-) -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |
