Default Error when trying to use Defrag

When I try to use Disk Defragmenter, I receive the following error:

I checked to make sure the file exists, and it does. When I go to Control Panel to Add/Remove Windows Components, defrag is not listed anywhere. How do I reinstall defrag? (I am using Windows XP Professional SP2)

Default Error when trying to use Defrag

This error: Windows cannot connect to the Disk Defragmenter engine???

Nothing happens when clicking on Defragment or Analyze in Disk Defragmenter
(dfrg.msc).

With XP SP2 the DCOM Server Process Launcher service needs to be running for
Defrag to work.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click DCOM Server Process Launcher |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Click OK | Close Services |
Reboot

quote
Note the following things will fail if this service is not running:
The builtin defrag will fail to work, and if running defrag from the command
line one gets this error:
Windows cannot connect to the Disk Defragmenter engine
quote
from...
DCOM Server Process Launcher
http://smallvoid.com/tweak/winnt/service/def.html

If that doesn't fix it.

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgui.dll | Click OK

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll | Click OK

Then navigate to C:\Windows\Inf ...
Start | Run | Type: %windir%\inf | Click OK |
Locate dfrg.inf, right click on dfrg.inf and click on Install

Hope this helps. Let us know.

This error, Wes:

"MMC cannot open the file C:\Windows\System32\dfrg.msc.

This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file."

The OP attached an image file attachment which included the error. I was dare enough to open the attachment ;-)

Nathan: Try this command-line, from Start/Run:

regsvr32 msxml3.dll

Press Enter.

Default Error when trying to use Defrag

Still no difference. I feel like I must be forgetting to do something, but I
am following the instructions you have been giving me, and it says

---------------------------
RegSvr32
---------------------------
DllRegisterServer in msxml3.dll succeeded.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

(or for the other dll's it said they succeeded). Is there some way I can
test to make sure these steps you are giving me really are succeeding, or is
there some other way to perform whatever task regsvr32 is doing, in case it
is not completely succeeding? Thanks.

Default Error when trying to use Defrag

Nathan,

It executed just fine, otherwise it would throw an error (8000xxxx).

Did you relocate the %APPDATA% folder, per chance? Check this KB:

You receive a "Cannot open Snap-in Name" error message when you try to start MMC on a Windows XP-based computer:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326574

- - -
When you try to start Microsoft Management Console (MMC) with a snap-in on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, MMC may not start and you may receive the following error message:
MMC cannot open Snap-in Name. This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created with a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file.
- - -

Also, make sure that the Windows and System32 folder are in the Path. Type "CMD /K SET" in Command Prompt to view all env. variables.

Default Defrag & MMC

After to have register the DLL e reintall dfrg.inf you should try to install MMC 3.0, you will see to work correctly your dfrg.msc.

Are you saying that Defrag does not work with the existing (factory default) version of MMC?
