Default is there a way to smartly access folders?

Hi all,

Everyday we have to open and save files documents. Often times we have only
a few folders that we like to use very often.

Today I opened and saved several Excel files, Word files, Visual Basic
files, and a lot other files.

Each time the windows save/open dialog starts from a stupid folder, and I
have to have quite a few clicks up, up, up, then down, down, down, down,
etc. to finally save/open the file at certain specific folders. I've
counted, in several cases, I've clicked 10+ times in order to get to desired
folders... this is very stupid and time-consuming...

Is there an application/software that help me make our everyday file
accessing life more efficient?

Thanks a lot!

First pasting a directory path from your clipboard to the "File Type" box,
followed by 'Enter' is one way to speed things up.

Why not simply create desktop shortcuts to the folders you open most
frequently?

Oh, definitely: you should try XYplorer!

XYplorer is a multi-tabbed file manager featuring a powerful file search,
versatile preview facilities, a highly customizable interface, and an array
of unique ways to efficiently automate frequently recurring tasks.

http://www.xyplorer.com/

Concerning "smart access to folders" let me quote three points from
"XYplorer's usability and efficiency highlights":

Tabbed Browsing: Have an unlimited number of tabs to make jumping around
between folders a one-click affair. Rename the tabs, drag-shift them
around, hide them, lock them, drag-drop stuff onto the tab headers...
the tabs remember their configuration individually and between sessions.

Catalog: Your favorite locations are deep down in some heavily nested
structures? Lift them to the surface! Your current project forces you to
repeatedly ride from one end of your hard disk (or LAN) to the other?
Join them within the flat hierarchy of a Catalog Category, and reduce
their mutual distance to 18 pixels! You can navigate by the Catalog
(finally a one-click favorite solution!) and you can drop stuff onto the
Catalog's items: file management cannot get any cooler!

Hotlist: Ctrl+H pops up the Hotlist, a brand-new interface to your
history, with the intention to present the history in a way that makes
it as easy as possible to quickly go back to one of the places you have
recently been -- as opposed to the traditional presentation of the
history which makes it easy to go back and forth on your recent track.
It is probably the single best usability innovation in file management
since the invention of Tabbed Browsing and the Catalog! If you
experience it once, you'll never want to miss it again...

His sarcasm notwithstanding, Ted's suggestion of TweakUI is indeed the easiest way to solve your problem. There is an option in
TweakUI that will allow you to select what folders are listed in the left pane of Open/Save dialog boxes. Not ALL file dialog boxes
will have the pane (particularly those from older programs), but most do. It still won't open automatically to the folder you want
(that's a different function which while possible to do, is not practical) but you can just click once on the folder in the left, so
it's only one click instead of 10+.

Do you believe it? The stupid MS programmer who designed the TWEAKUI should
really be cursed...

The TWEAKUI limits the length of directory path that I can put into the
Common Dialog(the default 5 paths).

Suppose I need a deep path "d:\My Personal
Documents\XXX\YYY\ZZZ\AAA\BBB\CCC\ ... ",

he TWEAKUI only takes the first 20 characters I guess,

Thus it is basically of no use,

not to say it can only allow 5 paths...

I've tried. It did not solve my problem that in any Open/Save dialog window
in any application, I want to save clicks...

But XYplorer does not help Open/Save window...

I've never noticed that. I agree it is silly, but then you just do what it does, but manually. (For the record, despite the length
restriction, I am elated to see that the TweakUI developer had the presence of mind to use expandable strings instead of plain
strings.)

TweakUI is just a GUI front-end for manipulating various registry settings. What you want to do is to create strings (expandable if
required) called "Place0" to "Place4"—unfortunately, only the first five are used—in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\comdlg32\PlacesBar.

Here's a sample REG file you could use:

REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\comdlg32\PlacesBar]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\comdlg32\PlacesBar]
;make a couple of simple
"Place0"="C:\Program Files\Some Company\Some Program\Some Thing"
"Place1"="D:\Foo\Bar\Baz"
;make the third one the desktop
"Place2"=dword:00000000
;make the fourth one "%userprofile%\%Blah%\Bloo" (whatever the variables expand to)
"Place3"=hex(2):25,75,73,65,72,70,72,6f,66,69,6c,6 5,25,5c,25,42,6c,61,68,25,5c,42,6c,6f,6f,00
;no fifth one

The REG file is very easy.

What the heck do you think TweakUI does?

It does not make any sense that UITWeak is so stupid and does not allow long paths...

Yes it does. Put in as long a path as you want (well, as long as the file system allows) in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, boxes.
Only the first one is missing the flag that allows it to scroll, allowing you to enter a path longer than can be displayed. You can
still enter a long path in the first box though, this will work:
c:\iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, is that long enough for you? Would you like a
patch to fix the first box? I just made one in about 40 seconds.

And limit it to only 5 paths...

How many do you need? 1,000,000?

This is ridiculously stupid!

You're the first I've heard complain about it. If you don't like it, you certainly don't have to use it; you can program your own,
or commission your own program to be written, or keep searching for an existing one, or…
