Blocking Unwanted Connections with a Hosts File
On this website http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm there is a great
deal of information about using the MVPS Hosts file At the bottom of the page it shows this:- Microsoft and or MVPS.org are in no way affiliated with, nor offers endorsement of, this site. Copyright © 1998 - 2018 All rights reserved. http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm = Can anyone tell me who *IS* responsible for the site if it has no 'affiliation' with MVPS.org? http://www.mvps.org From Virus Total - Serving IP Address 216.155.126.40 http://216.155.126.40.ipaddress.com TIA -- David B. |

It is a scheme that Microsoft started long ago to award some sort of recognition to amateurs who provide helpful advice, code, etc for Microsoft products, either on forums or their own websites. If you look at the Technet forums you will see signatures with similar abbreviations for other schemes that MS operate. Often with similar disclaimers if they link to a non-MS website. To answer your question about the hosts file website, the MSVP who operates it is responsible for it. |

The way Microsoft promote the scheme, especially via their award winners, is misleading. Many do it because it benefits their business activities but many others are true amateurs who undertake all their MVP activities as a hobby. I have always found the true amateurs to be the ones who offer the most useful and interesting activities. If you look at the hosts website properly you will see that "true amateur" applies to the operator who notes alongside his photo that he is retired. If you are desperate to know his name I suggest you contact him and ask him. |

If an MVP site had a forum, and an MVP banned him, then a picture of the MVP would be added to Davids dart board in the basement. David needs to know the details of the MVP, so he can acquire a photograph of the individual for the dartboard. When David is banned from a forum as "David", he'll come back as "Bob" and post into various random forums with "Why did you ban my friend David?". And so on... Rinse and repeat and repeat and repeat... For 20 years, if that's what it takes... I don't know if the DSM has an entry for this behavior or not. It's sorta like "excessive hand washing" or "banging your head against a wall", only it involves forums and posting off-topic content. Paul |

Â*Â* Paul We've had this kind of conversation before, Paul! https://alt.windows7.general.narkive...-natoli#post19 The word you are looking for is PERSISTENT! There is ALWAYS a reason for everything. I *KNOW* I'm a 'good guy' looking for the bad ones, so if folk will not correspond with me/talk to me then, more or less by default, they most probably ARE suspicious characters! But I don't HATE anyone and I do NOT throw darts at their photographs! ;-) -- David B. |

I *KNOW* I'm a 'good guy' looking for the bad ones, David B. is dangerous, as is Good Guy (perhaps one & the same). Similar to Diesel and the other psychopaths who get their jollies this way. Psychologically unsound, perhaps certifiable so - perhaps not certifiable. Dangerous nonetheless |

| MVPS is a Microsoft Volunteer Professional. Most Valued Professional. Here's a logo on Randy Birch's homepage: http://vbnet.mvps.org/welcome.htm In addition to professional status, it's my understanding that an MVP also gets free copies of just about everything, though they're supposed to be for "development purposes only". In my experience I've seen a lot of very helpful and generous MVPs. Also some know-it-alls and holier-than-thou types. And an occasional religious fanatic for whom Microsoft can do no wrong. I guess it's like any group affiliation in that way. People approach it differently. People also vary in their ability to deal with other people and communicate. But I'm not sure I can see any correlation between amateur vs pro in terms of who's more helpful. I've seen plenty of very helpful, modest and generous pros (Randy Birch and Karl Peterson come to mind). |

By now, most people know full well that you stalk certain sites, plus the sites of people who have openly refused to help you stalk the sites in the first category, but PT Barnum is on your side, so good luck. I'm sure you can hook a new sucker, although it would likely be temporary until he/she discovers what you're about. |
