Avast's "Smart Scan": Problematic Results Screen?
I just ran Avast's "Smart Scan" on somebody's PC and it came up with
what seems to me like an extremely-problematic results report: http://tinyurl.com/yd3brs3a "Weak passwords discovered".... WTF? How would Avast know???? I thought that Windows or Google or whoever stores them had at least *some* sort of security. "Vulnerable software found": Yo Avast!... you gonna tell me what it is or what? "Bad browser add-ons found": Ditto above Seems really goofy to me - hopelessly general, almost like a shill/come-on for some undisclosed service/product. Right now I wouldn't click the "RESOLVE ALL" button on a bet. Or is it just me? -- Pete Cresswell |

Right now I wouldn't click the "RESOLVE ALL" button on a bet. Or is it just me? https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB159 Looks like you have to click the green button to see the details. It merges several tools, some of which are payware (e.g., performance tune). When you try to run that fixer, you'll get "The online content is not available". I suspect "vulnerable software" means they are using the Software Updater component (I don't bother to install that nagware). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR3IeQqzYSE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srzFTRkspZ8 When watching the progress circle in the 2nd video, I see the following tool set being exercised: - Virus and Malwa Well, you can run a manual scan anytime you like. - Software Updater: nagware, attempts to tell you when there are newer versions of your installed software, will bitch about abandonware. - Home network security: checks password on router/gateway, like to make sure a boob doesn't leave the web server's password in their router set to the default of "password". This is the WiFi/Network tester. - GrimeFighter: payware hence lureware. From what I've read about it, it's crapware. The "performance" claim is a lie. It's a cleanup tool. It's not even an Avast product. Just use CCleaner. Smart Scan is a scanner that runs the other scan tools you can run individually (if you paid for them all). |
