KB971486 security update wants to install over and over??
Good morning,
For the record I am using a Compaq Presario AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3300+, 2411MHz/1.93 GBs RAM, running Windows Xp Home, SP3., with IE8. I just finished installing the monthly Microsoft Security updates and after finishing I noticed I still received a taskbar notification that another update was available. After I installed that one I realized it was one of the 14 I just finished downloading and installing minutes before. Is anyone else having this problem with KB971486? Thanks and regards, 2harts4ever |

KB971486 security update wants to install over and over??
UPDATE: I had submitted this question yesterday but when it failed to appear
after two or three hours I then submitted it to the Windows XP Update forum too. Now today I see both forums show my question. Sorry for any confusion this might have caused. Try the redistributable:

KB971486 security update wants to install over and over??
Check the KB971486.log, located in WINDOWS, to see what is interfering
with the update's installation. Or, clean boot XP and see if that gets the automatically downloaded update to install properly: How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 When the kernel is replaced, as it is from this update, security software may interfere with the operation. KB971486 security update wants to install over and over??
I've been following this thread have not been able to resolve. I found this information regarding the update's importance on TechRepublic so I've uninstalled it and checked it off to not be bothered about this update again: MS09-058/KB971486 - Important (2000, XP, 2003, 2008): An issue with the Windows kernel could allow an escalation of privileges attack. This is a relatively low-key bug, since the attacker would need to be logged in and running the exploit code, and remote and anonymous users cannot trigger it. Put this patch on during your next patch window. 1.6 MB - 7.8 MB Good luck! |

KB971486 security update wants to install over and over??
Do you think hiding this update will mitigate the vulnerability that's
described in the Security Bulleting ? Pretending the vuln doesn't exist because there's an issue installing the update is precisely why so many systems are compromised. MS offers *no-charge* support for issues with installing SEcurity updates and adverse effects from installed Security updates: Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-058 - Important Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (971486) http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS09-058.mspx " Support • Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from Security Support http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=21131 or 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. For more information about available support options, see Microsoft Help and Support. • International customers can receive support from their local Microsoft subsidiaries. There is no charge for support that is associated with security updates. For more information about how to contact Microsoft for support issues, visit the International Support Web site. http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=21155 " And, there is a workaround for getting this update installed. Uninstall KB971486 from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Reboot. Manually download the update from the MS Download Center and *save* it to the root drive, which on most systems, is C:\ : KB971486 for Windows XP 32 bit (x86) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Once the download completes close *all* programs and browsers. Click Start Run Browse Navigate to the root drive (C:\) and click once on it to highlight it, then click Open. In the Open: field add this the end what is showing /o The line will now look like this C:\WindowsXP-KB971486-x86-ENU.exe /o NOTE the *space* between the e and the / Then click OK and the update will install properly. There should be a prompt to restart the system. Do so and you're finished with this update.
